Re: unable to update anything and error messages

Try this. Go to Start Menu\Programs\Accessories and right-click on Command
Prompt. Choose "Run as Administrator". Then type the command:

sfc /scannow

Press enter on your keyboard.

The System File Checker scan may take awhile; this scans all system files.

You could also type the command:

sfc /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\AppPatch\AcLayers.dll

This gives a report, or tries to repair, that particular file.

Re: unable to update anything and error messages

When you type just this command:

sfc /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\AppPatch\AcLayers.dll

does it say there were "no integrity violations found" or does it say that
there's an error?

Re: unable to update anything and error messages

Try this. Open Control Panel > Windows Update. Click on "View update
history". Is there an entry "Update for Windows Vista (KB935280)"?
If there is, go back to the main Windows Update window and click on
"Installed Updates" (on the left-hand side of the window, at the bottom),
and remove "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB935280)" (only). Then go here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=88379

Download and install the appropriate Package for your computer.

If that update is not listed in "View update history", then just go to that
page and download and install the appropriate Package for your computer.

Re: unable to update anything and error messages

I'm not clear at what point you got the "acces denied error". Did the
message occur when you were trying to uninstall the update? Is "Update for
Windows Vista (KB935280)" listed in your "View update history"?

Re: unable to update anything and error messages

Removing KB935280 fixed my problem. Reinstalling caused the problem to reoccur.

As to the 80070005 error, downloading a fresh copy of the windows update agent may help:

You receive an access violation error and the system may appear to become unresponsive when you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update
