| | Backup / restore issues Like a good lad, I set Vista Home Premium to make regular backup runs weekly to a partition on my hard drive under letter Z ..... My motherboard died and I had to swap it out for another - but the HDD was fine. Having reinstalled Vista on C: I went to restore my mail from the backup and on each occasion I get the error message that "the disc containing the backup is not accessible. Please make sure it is turned on and accessible." Well, it certainly is turned on and accessible - I can go into each file individually (zipped) and locate the relevant files - but if I try and manually restore them, Outlook will not recognise them - so I assume that there is some sort of clever function taking place that I don't know about. Can anybody assist me please? Regards Mick -- |

| | RE: Backup / restore issues If the hard drive was fine, why did you restore vista on the drive? Outlook has a forum that you should visit for help. Try opening OL and choosing File, Open Outlook Data File on the menu to see if OL can find your missing file. All my old files were then put into a folder - 'windows old' by the install routine - but like a plonk, I deleted the 'users' file with my original mail .pst in ... no problem I thought .... they are backed up. It's not an OL issue, it's a restore issue - but I'll post in the OL forum to see if anybody can assist. Mick -- |

| | Re: Backup / restore issues How are you trying to restore them? Vista file backup backs up files in zipped format and any "unzip" program should give you accesss to the files. I can get access manually - and unzip them. I can physically place them in the correct location for Outlook - but the program reports them as not be the correct type of file. I have a feeling that this is because the files have become associated with Outlook - and I was wondering if they should be associated with something else .... or of course it may be because Microsoft backup has corrupted them all ...... wouldn't be the first time I have had 'issues' with MS backup routines. On the other hand, the Vista restore program is telling me that the disc that the backups are on is not accessible - tells me to make sure the drive is powered up and connected ! It certainly is ... and as stated, I can enter the drive and recover the files ..... which is what makes me thing that Vista backup has corrupted something somewhere making the files as much use as an ashtray on a motorcycle. ......can some kind sole please locate their Outlook .pst files and just take a peek to see what they are associated with and let me know ... ? I'd be very grateful. After that I'll go away and accept that I have lost all that data that I thought was safe! Thanks Mick -- |
