Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

Hi,

My new Vista machine seems to take AGES to copy files to network drives.
For example, copying a single 10mb file has so far taken about 10
minutes and it hasn't even actually started the copy yet - it still says
"Calculating..."

Windows XP can copy the file in about 4 seconds. Why should Vista take
several thousand times longer to do the exact same thing? I'm using the
same logon credentials on each machine.

How can I fix this?

Thanks,

Nick...

Re: Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

This is a known issue with Vista, there is a hotfix available but the
circumstances for the hotfix may not exactly match your particular
problem.
See the following:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931770/en-us

This KB article seems to be more relevant to my problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932170

....but doesn't include a hotfix - just workarounds. I'll have to give
them a go.

Re: Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

Good Luck, it's sort of a random type issue. Some Vista PCs exhibit
the slow copy and others do not. I haven't found a "Common Set" of
conditions where the copy issue happens.

Re: Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

Unfortunately none of the workarounds seem to have any effect. It still
takes several minutes to copy a tiny file to a network drive.

It looks like copying files in Vista is totally broken!

I really really hate Vista. It's just so incredibly buggy!

Re: Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

You might try disabling Remote Differential Compression.

You can disable it by going to Control Panel\Programs and Features > Turn
Windows Features On or Off.

There are lots of ways to copy a file: Drag-and-drop, clipboard, COPY,
XCOPY, etc. Then there's the copy TO vs copy FROM. You might try various
permutations to find one that works better.

Disabling Remote Differential Compression definately improved my copy
& move speeds

Re: Vista extremely slow to copy files to network drive

Hi,
I'm using Avast antivirus and any time I copy to another computer, Avast
generates an error that it could not scan. This causes a huge delay
especially if you are copying a large number of files. If I want to copy , I
temperarily disable the
Standard shield. This may not be your problem of course but I know a number
of people us Avast.
