Open Office vs Microsoft Office

All the Linux pundits think that OpenSource is the best thing since sliced
bread. Well, read the following and decide if working with OpenSource is
better than MS Office. For my money, I would rather have an industrial
strength product than a TOY. Even if the TOY is free.

Re: Open Office vs Microsoft Office

I know a very good and prolific writer, who uses openoffice and Linux so he
can be sure that he wont be hit by a virus. he makes millions.

sometimes its not about the word processor, but what you have to say...

Wine

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X,
OpenGL, and Unix. Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running
Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a
completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting
of 100% non-Microsoft code. However Wine can optionally use native
Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development
toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program
loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based
Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.Wine does not
have a menu entry (since it is a commnad line application. However, you
can double click any windows executable and make it run in wine. Wine
creates menu entries for all installed windows applications in

OMG...are you on something or what?
All any friggin writer needs is notepad on any computer! Or a legal pad,
pen or pencil.
I too know (knew, he very recently died) one of the most commercially
successful writers of the 20th Century. Legal pad and pencil is all he
ever used.
So please, don't use a "writer" as a good example of the power of Oo.
It's as bad example.
It makes you look foolish and stupid.

Oh please, give up looking like a fool. You're stating to make me feel
embarrassed for you.
Only an idiot would pay for first class excellent software and run it on
wine.
What is the point?
Ridiculous!

Why that's right, I don't need to buy MS Office after all, I already
have a pencil.

OO.org is free and does whatever most people need to do. MS Office 2007
Standard is $399. If you have the money, then by all means go buy MS
Office. Why badmouth Open Source software? If you don't like it, don't
use it.

Yep, some of us still remember and use them.
But I only use ones with an eraser.
And I still sharpen my own! :-)
