| | Windows Defender/Security Center Hi. I installed Windows Vista, however, ever since, my Security Center is telling me that Defender is not installed/turned off. I currently have both running (security center and defender), but the security center does not recognize defender. Everytime I start my computer i get a warning message that there is no virus protection/malware protection. Does anyone know what i can do to make the security center to recognize the already running defender? |

| | Re: Windows Defender/Security Center Windows Defender is not an anti-virus program. It is an anti-spyware program. You will not have an anti-virus program unless you download one that works on Vista. Such programs have been discussed at length in this newsgroup. | | Re: Windows Defender/Security Center My security center says "Spyware and other malware protection"......"Windows Defender is turned off." I have Defender running and turned on. It currently runs scheduled scans and I have had no other problems with it. I am just trying to figure out why the security center is not recognizing that it is running. Any ideas? | | Re: Windows Defender/Security Center I believe Chris may be referring to Malware under Windows Security Center. It shows Windows Defender as being turned off and does not let you turn it on. Windows Defender is loaded at start up but not recognized in the Security Center. Anyone else have this issue? Windows Defender is loaded at start up but not recognized in the >Security Center. Anyone else have this issue? I had issues with the Security Centre, mainly its very annoying and unecessary for experienced users to have this service running and whining in the system tray. I can see the point for non savvy users but I hate the thing. Used this fix to remove it altogether from http://www.chris123nt.com/guides/5365/ The tweaks there work for 5484 also. QUOTE Get Rid of The Nagging Windows Security Center Icon The Windows Security Center has been one of the biggest annoyances since the inception of the idea with Windows XP Service Pack 2. Now with Windows Vista™ it is new, improved, and even more annoying than ever before! Untill now, you could not get rid of the icon from your tray. Here's how to nuke Security Center off your system. This has been tested and there are no adverse effects from doing this. 1. Go to Start --> Run and type "cmd" without the quotes. 2. Type "cd\" followed by "cd windows\system32". 3. Now run the following commands: * takeown /f wscapi.dll * takeown /f wscsvc.dll * takeown /f wscui.cpl 4. Now you have ownership of the files. Go into the system32 directory in explorer and right click each file, go to the security tab and add an entry for everyone and give them full access permissions. 5. Disable the Security Center Service via services.msc if you have not already done so. 6. In the system32 folder rename the three mentioned dll's (change their file extension to .bak). 7. To get rid of the Security Center service from services.msc drop to a command prompt and type the following: * "REG DELETE HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\WSCSVC /F", hit enter and reboot. 8. Enjoy no more nagging or icon in your system tray! ENDQUOTE Jonah >"Chris" <Chris@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >news:5725A4E3-FD74-42E1-853B-1AAE19088BD3@microsoft.com... >> Hi. | | Re: Windows Defender/Security Center I had this issue after running VISTA for a few days. It started after a re-boot from a "blue screen", but I never did find the cause or a fix. I reloaded VISTA a week ago and, so far, the problem has not reappeared (both the initial installation and the reload were on a clean, formatted drive). Please send a feedback report to MS as it may help them debug this problem.
