Vista - license manager msg "Failed to open TCP port # in license"How to c

I'm getting the above message whenever I try to start lmgrd.exe for ArcGIS
(have the latest lmgrd.exe available for Vista 64-bit Xeon). The TCP port
listed in the license file is 27004.

This started after I tried to start the campus VPN network this last week,
which I now know is not set up for 64-bit machines. The result was lmgrd just
not loading and no access to the internet (no SSH). The latter I fixed with a
suggestion from MS discussion group 'Windows Vista Networking and Sharing'
(typed 'netsh winsock reset' at dos prompt as administrator).

I don't know what to do about the former.

What can I do to find out what happened to TCP port 27004? Or, can I just
change the TCP port referred to in the license file? How do I tell what TCP
ports are available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marian,

It sounds like you'll need to open a port in the Windows Firewall, for
LMgrd.exe to use (and possibly for ArcGIS, as well).

The "netsh winsock reset" has probably wiped out any firewall exceptions
which were active beforehand. You probably had port 27004 open, before; and
now that port is closed again.

ESRI have a KnowledgeBase article explaining how to configure the Windows
Firewall on XP for ArcGIS and FlexLM:

The procedure for Vista is pretty much the same. Note, you'll need to run
Control Panel as Administrator.

By the way, it's often considered poor form to post to multiple newsgroups.
I guess you're in a hurry for an answer. But maybe try one group at a time,
if you don't get an answer after a reasonable period then try the next
group. This is the usual "netiquette" for newsgroups.

Andrew, thank you for your help. Arc's 9.2 license manager is now working.
(It borrowing from some 5 or 6 threads to get ArcGIS going on this machine,
but it works.) My apologies about the cross-posting.

Hi Marian,

Cool, thanks for letting us know you got it working!

Personally, it doesn't bother me if people cross-post. But some other folk
seem to get very upset by it. So it was just a cautionary note, no big drama
:-)
