Depends on what kind of computer (desktop or laptop?) and what you mean by
"move" - just pick it up and move it (yeah, safe enough) or put it in a box
and ship it across country (no, you'll lose all unsaved data).

It's a Dell Inspiron 9300. I move it between my office and home. Can I put it
in sleep mode and safely move it from one location to another?
Seems I got into trouble with an earlier version of the laptop and software.
I'm running Vista Ultimate.
Thanks for your help.

In sleep mode it is still using power, your battery will be draining, if you
run out of battery while sleeping you might have problems.
I have that happen to me a couple of times (car adapter connector worked
loose). System complained bitterly about improper shutdown and checked
itself out on next power up, no harm apparently but didn't seem like a good
idea.
Should place in hibernate rather than sleep if going to be off AC power.

No, I would hibernate it before moving it in this manner.
