It would appear that you need to either get someone to help you set up your current printer or buy one with Vista drivers (and make sure it has the X86 or X64 drivers that match your os {X86, I hope}) "MS" <maria.steyn@wanadoo.nl> wrote in message news:eXAjXmZ1HHA.4476@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... | | Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? I feel the pain but that happened to my HP 2610 as well until HP came out Vista driver for it (but still required a few tweaks). Rant: 12 years after the introduction of Plug and Play, we still can't make simple things like this as smoothly as possible. Software still blames hardware, and vice versa, and we are still living in DOS era as far as for the plug & play concept goes. Sorry but you have little alternatives other than following John Barnes's advise. Good luck. "MS" <maria.steyn@wanadoo.nl> wrote in message news:eXAjXmZ1HHA.4476@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... | | Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? - SOLVED - Just discovered Vista's Troubleshooting Centre Problems/Solutions etc. Very helpful feature; I will look there next time ;-)) It reports 'having recognized a Lexmark Z23 etc. printer, though cannot find a suitable driver.' Probleem met handtekening Naam van probleemgebeurtenis: PnPDriverNotFound Architectuur: x86 Hardware-id: USBPRINT\LexmarkLexmark_Z23-Z7FE8 Versie van besturingssysteem: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3 Landinstelling-id: 1043 Cute! So Vista 'reads' the device properties, shows them in Device manager and made me assume it therefore had to have the driver too. Wrong. xfile posted that unfortunately there is no Vista compatible Z23 driver available... I will do some testing and probably hook up another printer. Thanks all for your contributions. Learning every day... Maria "MS" <maria.steyn@wanadoo.nl> schreef in bericht news:%23tnpq%23C1HHA.3400@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... Hi, Does Vista Home Premium NOT accept a USB printer as its only/first printer? My Lexmark Z23-33 is recognized by the USB function but not visible nor addressable under Printers. Do I really need an old 'local' printer with the big connector as a first printer? Is there a workaround? Curious, Maria |

Remember the little bug that killed USBs when upgrading from XP to XP professional? I'm only glad that Microsoft acknowledges it's bugs more esily than you do! |

| | Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? If a USB printer could not be connected, and used, under Vista you would hear a general howling - and it would be on every news station and on every web site. You don't hear or see this this, do you? You have done something wrong as an IT professional of 20+ years. As said IT professional of 20+ years, you should know to uninstall the printer software, disconnect the printer, reboot - and start again - reading the help file this time. -- Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) "Tom Bonavia" <Tom Bonavia@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:BC443482-5736-4B81-8B59-192A15C1F986@xxxxxx Quote: > > > "Ken Blake, MVP" wrote: > Quote: >> On Wed, 1 Aug 2007 13:32:10 +0200, "MS" <maria.steyn@xxxxxx> >> wrote: >> >> Quote: >> > Does Vista Home Premium NOT accept a USB printer as its only/first >> > printer? >> >> >> Certainly it *does*. >> >> Quote: >> > My Lexmark Z23-33 is recognized by the USB function but >> > not visible nor addressable under Printers. >> >> >> Then you haven't installed it correctly. There is a "Howling" about WGA, WPA, the poor performance of Explorer, the incompatibility issues and the fact that just months after release MOST users are hoping a service pack is soon released that will fix what's broken (Although like XP SP1 it probably won't). |

| | Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? Right. There is a howling about that. But there is no general discontent about printer support. So, why don't you keep it on topic. | | Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? Thanks for stepping in Charlie but there's obviously no help for some people! There are a bunch of hotfixes for various non-existant USB problems at this URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;936003 I haven't had time to try them but they probably won't hurt. If anyone has useful suggestions beyond the normal troubleshooting (I've uninstalled everything including the USB ports themselves, tried different cables, etc.) I'd love to know. I have a 'Vista certified' Canon i860 and an Acer Aspire 5610-4648 with Vista Home Premium and all the latest updates. It sees the device when I connect the printer and loads the drivers but does not create any printer instance that I can actually print to. I can manually add a printer and change the port to USB but that doesn't do anything. "Charlie Tame" wrote: Quote: > Richard Urban wrote: Quote: > > Right. There is a howling about that.
