Vista - HP VISTA ACTIVATION UTILITY... OR NOT?

So, I bought an HP Pavilion a1726x a few months ago, with Vista Home Premium.
I'm pretty sure after setting things up, I downloaded, installed, ran, the
activation utility. So I have a valid copy of Windows. Great, I would hope
so. Fine. So now, every few days, I get this HP Update popping up, wanting me
to D/L the Windows Vista Activation Utility! But... I did! Only this time, It
won't ever complete the download. Does anyone have any idea how to make this
thing give up, or at least let me hide it or something?

Greg. HP activation is about the computer your bought. Vista activation is
for MS registration. They are two different things. Most of the software
loaded needs something done of first run. If in doubt go back where you
bought the laptop and ask. HP usually has some funny software loaded.

No it isn't. It's for Vista's activation, with is required. Vista
registration is not required.
They are two different things.

Yeah, I think I do. I haven't found any program that doesn't work yet, at
least of the few I use. The store I bought it from closed, and the closest
one's pretty far away now.¬ _¬ But I guess maybe I'll check around to see if
I can find what it's connected to.
It's just that it's called HP Vista Activation, blah, blah. So I wasn't sure
what it was reffering to- the HP or the Vista. Since I'd only heard of
activating Windows, I naturally assumed that's what it was talking about. Not
that that means anything, mind you.

Didn't mean to jump on you, Ian. Maybe should have used a smiley to make
it look less harsh than it does now.
It's just that registration and activation are so often confused, and
that can (partly) easily be avoided by using the right terms when
writing about them.
So, nothing personal, and I didn't mean to be harsh. I'm sorry if I made
it look like that.

All OEM machines that come with an operating system preinstalled - HP,
Dell, Sony, etc. - are already activated when you get them. The OEM has
handled this for you.

I have set up numerous HP machines with Vista for clients and I've never
seen a popup requesting Vista activation. Registration for HP products
(including the computer), yes. Even though you purchased the machine
from a shop, you should call HP for tech support and find out what this
really is.

If you have an HP machine that came preloaded with Windows Vista, it should
require activation. I've got an HP dv6209tx, and it doesn't require
activation after a system restore (created a restore dvd using the recovery
dvd creation software).
