Re: MVP's Can't you STOP the spammers?

Can you use OE to point to the Google servers or do you have to point to
msnews.microsoft.com?

You're confusing running ONE particular news server with the wider
Usenet universe which Microsoft has ZERO authority over. Why would
anyone want to access this newsgroup via Microsoft servers? They're
slow, often go down and they censor. I bet fan boys don't get censored
or the MVP gang.

Don't think so but you can use a free server like aioe.cjb.net and get a
lot more groups than msnews can. For example, you can access
alt.os.linux.ubuntu :-)

It sure would, but experience has shown this to be a pipe dream. Even
if everyone here stopped today, there would be new people here
tomorrow and they would respond.

The only solution, imperfect as it is, is use of the killfile.

I agree that it's not perfect but when several people continually respond to
them it's certainly not helping the situation. Just because a solution
isn't perfect doesn't mean it won't help some. Besides, if somebody new
falls into their little game a response to the newbie explaining that they
are arguing with a troll can shut off those avenues as well.

I just started perusing this group recently because I ran into some issues
with Vista and thought it might help and it has. Unfortunately I've already
had to killfile more people here than any other group I've ever dealt with
and am on the verge of killfiling several MVP's because so many of their
posts are just troll baiting noise. I know you guys know better.

Bob;
As with Windows XP, the general newsgroup seems to be a catch all.
There are many Windows Vista newsgroups.
Many of the questions posed here are better answered in a different
group more specific to the issue.

Unfortunately even the suggestion of someone posting to a more
appropriate newsgroup has some complaining that the person making the
suggestion is trying to control others.

Sorry, can't help other than to say reading this group almost demands a
newsreader with scoring capabilities such as Dialog, Pan, SLRN and, of
course, my choice, Xnews.

Windows Mail is improved over Outlook Express but being able to
killfile or scorefile is one area where it's still deficient.

Why can't you admit the real problem is too many posters here are hot
heads and can't resist responding to and trying to bait other people?
I can stop responding to idiots like Frank without even giving it a
second thought. However it is fun to make him dance and dance he does.

Then there is the MVP problem. A few jerks just can't help being
control freaks, net cops and BS spreaders.

Don't blame me for pointing out this newsgroup is a circus. Instead
complain to the people that MAKE it a circus. Even if you did, you
think for second the clowns would stop being clowns? Of course not.

Understood; I have a long history with the newsgroups in other forums and
have been through this many times. All I'm saying is that if people
thinking ignoring the trolls is a pipe dream then I've got to wonder why
they think constantly interacting with them is going to help. I'm not
saying you shouldn't give new, off-topic posters the benfit of the doubt and
tell them that they are in the wrong place... I'm saying that once it's
apparent you have a troll the only thing that *might* work is ignoring them.
I'd hate to see a potentially useful group get bogged down in all these
long, pointless threads.
