Reboot failing

I just installed Vista Home Premium, and so far I'm kinda a little shocked as
to how my P4 2.6 with 1gig ram is handing it...it's pretty good. But what I
have noticed is that it's not handling reboots very well. I'll do something
(i.e. install program and puter needs rebooting) and it'll shut down okay,
get to the point where the green thingy slides across the screen at the
bottom and continue to do that, until I see the Hard drive light on my case
stop and the green bar will continue to keep sliding across for 5 for minutes
then just stop. Then when I hit the reboot button on the case, it reboots
again, gets to the Safe Boot Menu, I chose to start normally, and then it
reboots just fine and normal. Has anyone encountered this situation and have
any suggestions? I've already updated to the most recent sound and video
drivers but the problem is still continuing to occur. Your help is
appreciated.

Did you update all your other drivers, drivers for all your other
peripherals? If yes, start by disconnecting peripherals one by one,
rebooting after each one to see if you can then get the system to reboot
properly. If that doesn't turn up anything, you may have to start removing
applications one by one, same process as above until you find the problem.

You can try checking Event Viewer under Administrative Tools in Control
Panel but shutdown and reboot issues are usually difficult to resolve
without resorting to trial and error.

Re: Reboot failing

I've got a budget AMD Sempron 64 2800+ that doesn't run but maybe 15% faster
than what you have. (And that's due to an overclock.) Anyway, my green bar
goes across maybe twice before it's ready to go, so I would suspect
something is causing the boot problems, and like someone else said, it's
possibly a peripheral issue. It may also be caused by a program that is
incompatible with Vista. For example, I've seen Easy CD Creator 5 on XP
without the XP patch cause this kind of behavior.

RE: Reboot failing

Well this issue has a happy ending. Yesterday I went in and ran Windows
Update manually and it found 3 "optional" updates, including a new driver for
my Fastrak SATA raid chip. Once that was installed, the reboot went
perfectly. Thanks everyone for all your help.
