| | Re: Lost restore points I am talking about saving the "restore point" data that exists within Vista BEFORE booting to XP erases it. If Vista creates a restore point that data lives on the hard drive. There must be some way to copy that data to some safe place prior to booting to XP. Then when you boot Vista and need a restore point you copy that data back to where it would normally live. Has this ever been discussed? The entire Vista partition would have to be backed up with with imaging software. Regards, Bert Kinney MS-MVP Shell/User http://bertk.mvps.org Member: http://dts-l.org |

| | Re: Lost restore points Dan R-- I think it has. We had a lot of discussion and several people dissected what is going on very well during many of the Beta builds in 2006, and early in 2007 on this group. If you do a search for system restore you should find them, except for the limitation of how long some of the posts stay on the server, and I'm not precise on how long that happens. You're idea would make sense, except that I don't think it would confer immunity on the Vista restore points because XP booting will discard them and it's as Bert says--their would have to be some backing up with imaging software. I favor Acronis 10. | | Re: Lost restore points I posted many times saying the same thing. I said it to MSFT in chats but they said they weren't going to do it. I'm not a developer--someone who is would be qualified to say how long it might take them and someone who works with the teams who make system restore would be best. I have wondered how much time and trouble but I just don't have a way to know on my own. Then when you boot back to Vista you create a dummy restore point and then use the saved restore data to replace the dummy data. Is the possible/impossible? |
