You might look at this tutorial to see if it will help you on allowing your antivirus program to run at startup. If you have Windows Defender running, did you click the Permit button to allow the startup changes?

The desktop icon for Adobe Reader 8.1 is a richly colored icon. The icons
for individual PDF files unfortunately is still the white box with the red
logo in it.
