| Vista's Remote Desktop Freezes/Resumes Periodically With XP Pro I purchased Vista Ultimate with my new Toshiba laptop. I am finding that Window's Vista's Remote Desktop seams to have a compatibility problem with earlier OS. I want to be able to take remote control of my work machine, which is Windows XP Professional. When I do, it works OK for a while and then freezes anywhere between 10 and 30 seconds - after which, it resumes. If I was in the middle of typing something, a few extra characters before I realized, the letters will not be lost. But this can be frustrating when clicking on a different part of the screen. If I click elsewhere and wait for the pause to finish, the cursor will go to the new location after the freeze/delay is over with. I have isolated it to Vista's Remote Desktop. I have another older laptop which has XP Professional and it works fine. On the Vista laptop, I tried both wireless and ethernet. I also tried to take remote control of an XP Pro desktop that was within my home network (workgroup) - essentially taking the VPN out of the equation. There is a message that pops up when I first take remote control - something to do with the earlier operating system. I will follow up with the exact text. I am really hoping this can work though. My other option, when drivers become available, is to revert back to XP Pro on the new laptop - not desirable. |

| Re: Vista's Remote Desktop Freezes/Resumes Periodically With XP Pro Hi DancingOak. First, a question: What applications and how many of them are you running when this happens? One possibility to try is to disable IPv6. We'll know more when we get the answer to the above question. Thanks! | Re: Vista's Remote Desktop Freezes/Resumes Periodically With XP Pr Thank you Gloria for your suggestion. Before I approach the first question - I would like to try disabling IPv6 first. Per the following technet article, I disabled IPv6 in my network connections and it actually solved an unrelated issue with the VPN. But there is two parts to the solution - one that involves using regedit (Registry Editior). I created the new registry entry(dword 32 bit) per the article and named it "DisabledComponents". The part I am shady on is how to set the value. I THINK the binary value I want is 111111 - my intent to completely disable IPv6 on my computer. They later say the hex value I want for that is 0xFF. I'm not well versed in hex, but the reg editor will not accept "x" as part of a hex value so that must be shorthand? | Re: Vista's Remote Desktop Freezes/Resumes Periodically With XP Pr I think I may have discovered the culprit. I removed McAfee Security Center/Antivirus. It was a trial anyway. There seam to be pauses in the action but they're not as long. I'll follow up if I prematurely stated the fix. I'll try to find a lighter-weight virus software that plays nicer with Vista. | Re: Vista's Remote Desktop Freezes/Resumes Periodically With XP Pr The problem just occured again. But it doesn't seam to be happening as often. It seams that McAfee must have simply been a catalyst. So programs running: On Vista: Cisco VPN Client, Remote Desktop Connection On Host XP Machine: Outlook, SQL Query Analyzer. The last freeze happened in Outlook. It has also happened in MyEclipse IDE before. Background processes in both machines are long lists of things. I'll see if any are unessessary and remove them from startup. "DancingOak" wrote: > I think I may have discovered the culprit. I removed McAfee Security > Center/Antivirus. It was a trial anyway.
