drvinst.exe runs automatically & eats 40% of CPU in Vista Home Pre

Hello all,

I have been having this problem in a couple of my builds w. Vista Home
Premium. For some reason, CPU usage is always in the 40% range. Using Task
Manager > Show all Processes, I find that drvinst.exe under
c:\windows\system32 is always running. Why is this happening? I can
manually terminate it, but it's a pain to do so everytime the system boots
up. I've already checked Device manager, and there are no
uninstalled/problematic devices with a question mark. Here are my builds:

Build 1:
AMD AM2 6000+
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Highpoint RocketRAID 2310 RAID card w. 4x 250Gb drives
MSI K9N Platinum SLI Motherboard
MSI 8600GTS video card

Build 2:
AMD AM2 6000+
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Highpoint RocketRAID 2340 RAID card w. 16x 320Gb drives
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition Motherboard
XFX 7950GT video card

I've used Highpoint RocketRAID cards before on other builds, and these are
the first two that I'm noticing this issue. Is it possibly due to the 4GB of
installed RAM (I know windows only recognizes 3GB or so).

Thanks in advance!

That file is often replaced by malware.... find ALL instances of it and
COMPARE them to each other and scan for virus and spyware.

Check the Registry to see where it is being called from :

Probably

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RUN

I know this is an old thread, but it's the one that shows up in all the search engines, so I thought this was the best place to put the answer.

If you installed the HighPoint management software and you happen to be running on an nvidia board, check the following before you jump to the conclusion that it's malware.

Open the HighPoint Management App
You should see a management connection for the HighPoint card at the top.
If you see a second device like nvstore, nvgts or nv*** or any other motherboard based raid you are NOT using it, remove it from the console!

After you do so, your CPU should drop to normal levels.
