| | Re: Network PC's Where Are You In the Network window, when it's finished not finding your other computers, can you directly access a computer by name? Click in the address bar somehwere to the right of >Network> Type \\computername Does this connect to the machine as does using its IP address? "Justin" <Justin@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:45A27A94-1DA7-4BC3-9B40-3B6EAD49DA71@microsoft.com... I am fianlly trying to work with VISTA. I have been holding off for sometime now but as they say all good things comet to an end sometime and I guess now is my time. I have a small workgroup of 6 Windows XP Home PC's. I just got a new laptop with Vista Home Basic and have joined it to the workgroup. Now when I try to find the other PC's in the network I can only see my laptop and no other computers. I would like to connect to a shared directory on our (so called) server (just another workstation that has all our shared data) but cannot see any other computers in the network. I can however pping the other computers and can connect to them by typing \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX in the browser but I want to connect like I do through a my network places or something. Any suggestions would be appreicated..... Thanks, |

| | Re: Network PC's Where Are You MS can say what they want, but I've found it a gargantuan PITA to network XP and Vista. You have to install LLDP on all the XP boxes, reboot everything, and then fumble through all the firewall settings on XP to get things to work. If you're really lucky, your ability to see the XP boxes from Vistas' "Network" folder will work consistently. On my network, it's very inconsistent. The XP boxes are always ping-able and I can attach drives using "net use", and I can even go to my xp shares in the explorer windows by manually entering "\\pcname\sharename" in the explorer address bar. But discovery remains a very in and out proposition. Very frustrating.
