Vista - Network PC's Where Are You

I am fianlly trying to work with VISTA. I have been holding off for sometime
now but as they say all good things comet to an end sometime and I guess now
is my time.
I have a small workgroup of 6 Windows XP Home PC's. I just got a new laptop
with Vista Home Basic and have joined it to the workgroup. Now when I try to
find the other PC's in the network I can only see my laptop and no other
computers. I would like to connect to a shared directory on our (so called)
server (just another workstation that has all our shared data) but cannot see
any other computers in the network. I can however pping the other computers
and can connect to them by typing \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX in the browser but I want
to connect like I do through a my network places or something.
Any suggestions would be appreicated.....

In the Network and Sharing Centre, change Network from a Pulic network to a
Private one.

In Vista Network and sharing make sure Network Discovery is on, and Vista's
workgroup name, WORKGROUP is changed to XP's default workgroup name, MSHOME.

It is in the Private network already

Workgroup name doesn't matter as long as ND is on and the network type is
Private and not Public.

Netwrok discovery is on and I have changed the workgroup name to match the
workgroup ever other PC is in.

No mate, it doesn't. That is what the Network Discovery thing is about.
Other Computers are found faster when in the same workgroup, but they don't
have to be. I have my LAN on two different workgroups. It mattered on XP.
