very irritating

I upgraded XP pro to VISTA ultimate and a very strange problem I am facing.
Whenever I try to browse my root drive or any folders there in from "Run",
the system crashes and blue screen shows me fltmgr.sys as the cause. Any
help is appreciated.

Re: very irritating

In absence of any help (other than installing afresh), I uninstalled
anti-virus AVG and the system no longer crashes......I have tried AVAST but
that turned out to be worst than AVG for my system, the very login results
in fltmgr.sys triggered crash.......any idea what should I do? Which
anti-virus should I install?

Re: very irritating

I suspect your real problem is drivers, check ALL and especially
Video and hard disk and be sure to update any required hard
disk utilities. Then try Avast again.

Re: very irritating

Just to chime in...

I have an OEM install of Vista Home Premium. I keep my system in
pristeen condition (manually clean the registry when uninstalling,
delete folders, clean prefetch, etc.) but have had the BSOD about 5
times in 3 months. Everytime it's the fltmgr.sys.

There doesn't seem to be a lot out there about this file & Vista yet,
but on some other boards the one thing that seems to start standing out
is AV. I'm running Kaspersky and have seen a couple of mentions of it.
Before the release of Vista there were some worms that were becoming a
problem for XPs AV core. I don't remember the name of the file but it's
what MS provided as an API for AV companies to work with
(non-technically speaking). These worms were affecting this file
rendering any AV useless and you had no choice but to repartititon.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if MS tried some major last minute
changes on Vista and is having problems communicating with AVs.

Oh, and I mentioned Kaspersky above because in addition to my BSODs I
have also had Kaspersky die or lock up the computer 3 or 4 times.

If anyone has more detailed or technically accurate info on this, it
could be a big help to me.

Thanks
