Due to the darkness and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position and course to get back to the airport. The pilot saw a tall building with lights on and flew toward it, the pilot had the passenger draw a handwritten sign reading "WHERE AM I?" and hold it up for the building's occupants to see. People in the building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER." The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the passenger asked the pilot how the "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded "I knew that had to be the Microsoft support building, they gave me a technically correct but entirely useless answer." |

That was funny the *first* time I heard it 30 years ago, only then it was an IBM support building in a different city. It probably goes back farther than that. Mike |

A lot of people may not have seen it or heard it so its for these people that I post it. What I found so amusing about the joke that the punch line is just so true and can also refer to a lot of the MSVP's in these groups |

In the original version, the man was in a hot air balloon about ten feet above the ground, and asked someone on the ground where he was. When the answer came back, you're in a balloon ten feet up in the air, he replied "You're an IBM salesman, right?" "How did you know?" brought the same answer. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
