| | Start up programs blocked I have been using Vista Home Premium for four months without a problem. However the last three times I have turned laptop on I receive a message saying 'windows has blocked some startup programs'. When I look at the list it is things like norton antivirus, google toolbar, internet explorer etc. plus others I don't know what they are. I'm worried about disabling any of them in case they are needed but haven't changed anything recently anyway so why should I start getting this message? There was a windows update recently - could that have done it? Any replies appreciated. -- Tammie P |

| | RE: Start up programs blocked By all means follow John's links and fix the problem that way. However, out of curiosity, you might want to try this first. Use the Windows key+R to get to the command line (or Start, Accessories, Run). enter 'msconfig' and OK. This will start the system configuration utility. Click on the Startup tab. You'll see a list of the programs Windows loads when it starts. Find the programs in question and see if they have become unchecked (disabled). Check them to enable them. Close the program and be sure to check the little box that tells Windows not to start the configuration utility each time Windows starts or you'll get the same message from Windows Defender saying it's blocking the Configuration Utility from running. If that doesn't solve the problem follow John's instructions because it sounds more practical. -- qfreed "Tammie" wrote: > I have been using Vista Home Premium for four months without a problem. > However the last three times I have turned laptop on I receive a message > saying 'windows has blocked some startup programs'. | | Re: Start up programs blocked I have the same experience as you. When first installed, the popup showed up for a while, then stopped. Nothing has changed except WU and now I am getting the popup again. If it was just on startup, it would be annoying, but it pops up periodically the whole time I am logged on, maybe once every 3-4 hours. Very annoying. | | Re: Start up programs blocked If you are still getting the clouded message click on the Defender icon. Select Run blocked program. If you see the System Configuration Utility program listed, run it. You will get a dialogue box with a smaller check box in it. Next to the check box it will say somthing akin to "Do not start utility each time windows starts". Check that box and you should not see the message the next time you boot up unless Windows is also blocking some other programs. -- qfreed "John Barnes" wrote: > I have the same experience as you.
