Tech Support claims I will not have to go into Vista repair at all... although they will not vouch for any third party software, such as Norton Ghost. I'm keeping my fingers crossed... Ross |

| | Re: recovering from disk crash... (Just another data item: I ran a System File Checker (SFC) on my backup Vista disk with the following options: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=h:\windows off a privileged command prompt and it came back clean -- no modifications, everything on the "H:" drive (on the new Vista installation, which is actually my back up) I'm beginning to feel comfortable... Which is making me very uncomfortable... :-) Ross |

But if you were booting directly into XP in order to restore your cloned drive, that would indicate XP was now in single boot mode. Of course, if you had left the dual boot config intact and were booting into XP off the dual boot menu, then yes, I'd agree, you probably should be able to boot back into Vista with no repair. Of course, by the time you read this, you should already know the answer!:-) -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

Of course, by the time you read this, you should already > know the answer!:-) My current installation is a dual-boot situation where I can boot into my old XP, or into the new Vista installation. Microsoft had just called to follow up on where I am. I did not want to do anything on a Sunday, since no one would be available to bail me out if things turned to feces. MSDN/Microsoft tech support just called me. As far as they know I should be able to do a "copy my entire hard drive" over my current of Vista from my backup Vista, using Norton Ghost 12 without any problem at all. Of course, since Ghost is a third-party product Microsoft says they can guarantee nothing. But if I tried to do this backup/restore and it doesn't work I have the wonderful option of simply reinstalling the Vista. This is so much fun: nobody can give me a straight/definitive answer. We hates this! Ross PS: Michael, send me your e-mail address/phone number when you have a chance? I for one do not use anti-spam addresses as some people do... |
