Vista - Cookies are not working at all.

Just got a new computer that is about a week old.

The past day my computer has suddenly stopped using cookies, except on
Yahoo.com. The rest of the time I'll log into one of my favorite websites.
I'll then shut down the browser and go back an hour later, only to find that
my cookies aren't there. This problem is both in IE and the MSN browser.

I've already been to this and other forums searching for an answer. I put
the privacy level on low, I've put them in the safe list, I've restarted my
computer, reset the setting for internet options, killed my first born ( jk )
ect.. ect...

Nothing is working.

I've scanned my computer for viruses and trojans, but have none. I haven't
downloaded anything that wasn't secure, so I'm not shocked about that.

What I am shocked about is that Mr. Bill Gates after bleeding the souls out
of countless users has the nerve to charge money for a phone call, that by
all means, should be free.

I'm stumped at this point. My only other idea is to call Vista a failure and
to install XP instead. Either that or I'll return this new computer and buy a
Mac.

Can anyone help with this problem. I've been working on it for the past four
hours and don't know what else to do.

Welll sounds like the logical thing to do is by all means return your
computer because you are having trouble with your cookies. And when
your car's gas tank runs dry, I'm sure you trade in the "heap" for a new
one with a full tank of gas!!

Mr. Bill Gates has something better going for him than the eggregiously

in Indian Cities. He has us. I always have to say when I criticize them

contrator uses and the lazy butts in seats in Redmond Washington who don't
monitor them because end users are not a big deal in the MSFT scheme a

help a lot better and we aren't paid jack by MSFT or you. Many of us do it
because MSFT abandons their customers with such poor phone support so we try

If all Bill Gates' admirable health initiatives were run at the same quality
as MSFT Phone support aka Convergys of Ohio in India--there'd be a lot of
dead patients.

I'm a bit puzzled by ***what you're actually experiencing and seeing. Are
you getting a message that your cookies are not working or aren't there or
aren't being made?

Is the page not loading? What error message are you getting on your desktop
or when you check Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc in run box>click on Windows
Logs on left>Application.

How do you know this is a cookie problem? Cookies in Vista are located at
C:\Users\Profile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies and you may have
to take ownership of the folder to view them. That said, I notice that many
many of the cookies I use aren't there when I look in it.

I'm not even sure there is not another Cookies folder or it may be a
junction at C:\Users\Your Profile\Cookies.

Again, it's somewhat vague from your post as to how cookies are involved or
if there is some other reason for your pages not loading. Try SFC just in
case it helps.


would try running SFC and if you need to and have the Vista DVD (MSFT
bullies most OEM named partners who sell PCs into not shipping it because
they are greedy and lack ethics leaving their end users up a creek without a
paddle when they need many of the tools to fix a no boot Vista). The man
partially responsible for this is Scott Di Valerio the OEM VP at Redmond.
He's the head of all the hard working OEM system builders and his computer
engineering background consists of his accounting practice at MSFT--he done
be accounting da money at the expense of the MSFT customer who pays one to
four grand for a computer (except Dell with Vista).

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.


How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

If no help from SFC, you can try a restore point to before this happened or
you try the steps below if you have a Vista DVD:

Pressing F8 repeatedly when you seem the firmware screen may be is a generic
way to launch Windows RE on some OEM Vista computers.

I'm going to give you a bunch of links and most of them you won't have to
use, but they are alternative ways to fix Vista.

Right now I want you to put in the DVD and restart. It will automatically
take you to this on your screen:

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on the
lower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list and
I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

The gray screen after you click the first link in the above pic will look

Click Startup Repair, the link at the top and after it scans>click OK and
let it try to repair Vista. It will tell you if it does, and if not

This should work, but if not,then you can follow the alternative ways to fix
this including booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key and using System
Restore.

Suggest you find out what accessory program is running on your computer that
cleans out your cookies on a reboot. IE 7 DOES NOT do this by default -
unless YOU tell it to.

Mr. Gates charges for help because YOU did not buy a retail copy of Vista
(or any other version of Windows). You had it supplied by the computer
manufacturer - hence, the computer manufacturer is the one responsible for
assisting you with problems with "their" integrated product!

Hint! If you have a Panasonic radio installed as a factory option on your
new vehicle, guess who is responsible for any problems it may develop?
Second hint! It isn't Panasonic!

So, instead of actually trying to give me an answer... you chose to go the
other route. If I wanted that kind of answer, I could have gone through
Microsoft, but then would have been charged $70 for it.

I'm frustrated, because Vista shouldn't be installed on any computer when
it's not working properly. I've had multiple problems this week and all of
them had to do with the actual operating system on my computer. I'm at the
point of utter frustration with it.

It seems I'm not the only one either, because of all the other "cookie"
posts I've seen on this forum.

The people who have retail copies of Vista who have a couple "help episodes"
with Convergys of Ohio's minimum waged butts in seats or who have retail
Office who have the same wretched eggregiously poor level of help haven't
gained anything helpwise from their retail purchase. What they have gained
with the exception of Dell who is now supposedly supplying them, is that all
important Vista DVD with Win RE on it.

Anyone seeking help is much better off in these groups or in another high
quality forum and there are hundreds if not thousands of them.

The end users who buy retail are still getting pathetic support by phone
which is contracted out by MSFT with no quality control in place whatsoever
to Convergys of Ohio who gets the cheapest and least trained personnel to
man the phones by outsourcing to India.

There is an exponential difference between the engineers who are testers,
developers, and PMs on teams at Redmond and on other campuses and the poorly
trained Indians that MSFT uses as a beard between them and their customers
for so-called PSS or phone support. I sincerely doubt if whomever is
supposed to be quality controlling those support calls "to MSFT" for
endusers (aka Convergys of Ohio outsourcing to India because the labor is
the cheapest) has a viable pulse or Glascow coma score.

Your childish whining about how bad Vista is when you are have trouble
with cookies isn't gonna win friends and influence anyone to the point
of jumping up and down with a solution for you. Your ranting could have
been left out, IMO. And your lack of a sense of humor isn't all that
endearing either. Just like sick people can be found in a hospital,
there will be some folks on these forums with problems with Vista. That
should not lead you to believe Vista is the devil's work. sheesh.

I'm getting no error messages what so ever. I can log into and have my
information remembered by Yahoo.com, Myspace.com, but some other sites are
not keeping the information for me.

I have reset everything to the point of how the computer came to me. I have
put my privacy settings at low for the time being to see if that helped. I
have put the sites that I'm having trouble with on my "safe" list so that the
information will be remembered, but so far nothing. I'm stumped. It was
working yesterday, but now it's not. I haven't downloaded anything to cause
this. I ran a virus/malware scan, but my computer is clean.

I don't know what else to do.

Hi Matt--

Did you run SFC? Did you try a restore point? Did you try startup repair?
If so why not?

How do you know this? You say: What tells you this information that you are
giving us?

I'd only say there is no error message whatsoever if I had checked Event
Viewer and it's shortcomings are 3:

Many times the errors are false positive; they are in code that the average
user isn't about to be able to interpret or use but not much of the time;
and many are ectopically and metastatically scarttered in logs and encrypted
throughout the 4 corners of the Windows OS.

I'm not clear this is a cookie problem, that your cookies are cleaned out by
any application, or clear how you're sure it is. You haven't told me what
happens when you type a url in whose page isn't loading. I'll bet a window
comes up and something tries to happen. What is that something?

When you try to hit these particular sites that are causing trouble for you,
what precisely happens? Does the page load? How do you know it's a cookie
problem? You haven't said. Do you get a 404 error? What happens when you
go to your cmd prompt and ping the web site url? What happens when you go
to your command prompt and run a tracert command by typing:

tracert www.yahoo.com for example?

man.

You don't ring Alexander Bell when you can't make a phone call.

Vista is just a tool like any other piece of software and as such it works
fine when you know how to use it.
