Well, that's because when you initiate VPN connection from your home
computer, it changes its network location to be included in your
office's network. It's like if it was physically connected to your
office network. And as Windows sets the VPN connections as default when
active, your home computer doesn't respond anymore to your RDP requests
(it actually does, but from the IP address it got through VPN).
It would be simpler to connect to your office's VPN directly from your
laptop when travelling, but I suppose you'd have to convince the admins
there.
