| | Hotmail Upgrades! :-) http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...-upgrades.html I love Hotmail. I've used it thru its 2MB phase thru all the betas and everything. I used OE really early on, so they kept the old faithful guys on the system free. 2GB was great, but this is incredible. I'm just a little sad MS didn't kill Gmail earlier. They are powerful; they could have given people like 1GB when Gmail came out and matched it and there would be no battle. |

| | Cable TV Upgrades You know, I was watching TV the other day and said to myself. I could upgrade and get the sports package. So I called the cable company and upgraded. Now I can sit home in my pajamas all day, eating Ice Cream, watching sports all day. Isn't life grand? Just FYI. I don't even need to use Windows 2008 Server or Ubuntu to enjoy my TV. Just FYI. | | Restore Compression - Restore Horsepower - Restore Engine Life http://www.restoreusa.com/ This works wonders. Who gives a Rats Ass about Hotmail. Just FYI. Gmail works - have had several accounts for years. Tried out the other free email account services as well - most of them are functional - but GMail always offered a bit more (not talking about size - but services.) If Hotmail wants to offer more services - cool. I'll take a look at it. It might be nice to have a backup to what GMAIL already offers. I doubt either will 'kill' the other for quite some time - if ever. And anyone that needs that much space for email, needs to learn to archive. I manage users that waste that much space - and I tell them they are managing things badly. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

| | Re: Hotmail Upgrades! :-) I'm in grad school and can tell ya that the extra space is always appreciated. I have archived various documents online, and it's saved my a$$ quite a few times. And it is organized, especially since I use OE. Search has improved a lot over the years though and that makes things so much easier. While I understand what you are saying - if you have 8GB of email - you have been in Grad School too long - you need to graduate. ;-) It's not the total size that is likely saving your butt - but the individual file attachment size. Since most only allow 10MB-20MB attachments, to get ot 8GB - the number of attachments you would be storing is... wow. Organized or not - there is a point where you would be better off not relying on some 'not backed up, third party with no control by you' to archive your materials. ;-) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

| | Re: Hotmail Upgrades! :-) Guess everyone should use whatever they think works best. This is the way backup works for me. Critical stuff is backed up on DVDs but most of it is online so I can get it whenever I want. And FYI I'm a good student. I'm an engineer and I'll graduate (Masters, BTW) from USC in December '07 (1.5 years spent on my MS). That will be less than 18 years totally. My account is large because I've been using Hotmail for everything from the 2MB times. You have been using it forever - but how much of the stuff that is there do you utilize now or are you just being a packrat about it because you can be? I find the latter is usually true. I know people with over 10GB of email over a 4 year period - because they keep everything that comes to them, even email themselves documents and such. But those same emails over the past 4 years - some were never touched again - nor will they ever be. I realize space is cheap - especially when it is free - but I look at iot just like I do when i see people's garages unused for parking cars because they store all their unused crap in there - a waste. ;-) Again - each their own. I never questioned you ability at being a student... But I did point out that in order to fill up 8GB with 20MB file attachments - you are going to need a LOT of them. ;-) -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Spammers and hackers (amateurs, not professionals) occassionally crash mail servers, sometimes causing loss of saved and/or unread messages. Look into free online storage services, instead, such as x-drive. You'd think a grad student would have learned something about internet security by now. What is the higher education system teaching these days? ;-) |
