Vista - Aero = DreamScene??!?

Okay, so I went to animate my desktop background via; Control
Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Personalization>Desktop Background, I
chose 'Windows DreamScene Content' in the 'Location' drop-down menu, chose a
sample video, then a dialogue box above the taskbar told me 'Windows
DreamScene Cannot Start' because 'Windows DreamScene can only run when
Windows Aero scheme is selected.' So I hunt around with search and finally
end up on the Microsoft Help area which tells me that Aero is part of the
Vista Ultimate package. So I think, "O.K. Why won't it run then?" (No Answer)
So then I find out that I have to download the 'DreamScene Preview' from
Windows Update, but when I go to Windows Update, there is no option for
'DreamScene Preview'. So I think again. "Hmmm, I must have already downloaded
it automatically. So why won't it run?" (Guess what! No answer again.) So
then I think, "If it won't run, and it is not in the Windows Update list,
maybe Microsoft dropped the ball somewhere. Then I thought, "Naaww! Microsoft
is too good and too perfect to do that." (Actually, I NEVER thought THAT!) So
anyone know how I am supposed to get my desktop background to animate when I
can't find what the help section tells me I need to find and use in order to
switch to the Aero scheme which I also can't find but that I'm supposed to be
able to have and/or find and activate the DreamScene Preview which Microsoft
tells me is a preview since the final release isn't released yet. Hmm. You'd
think something that simple would be easy to fix. (Oh yeah. We're talking
about Microsoft.)

You never explicitly say you have Ultimate, but I'm guessing from the
context that you do, correct?

A couple of other thoughts. I doubt either one is the case, but just to
eliminate some possibilities:

1) Even if you do have Ultimate, do you have a graphics card that will
handle that? Have you checked what your graphics score is on the Windows
Experience Index?

2) When you go to Windows Update, do you tell it to look for more updates?
My experience has been that when you go to Windows Update, it only shows
what was avaiable last time it looked for updates. You have to tell it to
look again. If you're set for automatic updates, then this shouldn't be an
issue.

Also, the dream scene preview would be under the Windows Ultimate Extras
part of Windows Update. Do you see anything like that?

What and where is the 'Windows Experience Index'? And, yes, I am running
ultimate. And, no, I don't think my graphics card will run it after looking
at the properties. (My device driver was written in ancient Hebrew
heiroglyphics, I think.)

WEI is a scoring system MS has come up with. Rather than explain further,
I'll just tell you how to get there.
Probably several ways to get there, but here's one.

Go to the Welcome Center. (If you don't know how to get there, go to Control
Panel and pick the Welcome Center from there.) On the upper right of that
screen there's an option to "show more details." Click on that and the
Windows Experience Index is one of several things on that screen. Click on
the link and it will bring you to a breakdown of the things that made up the
score.

However, before you put any stock in that, choose the "Update My Score" link
on the right side of the screen.
That'll take a new reading of everything.

Anyway, once you have a reliable rating, you'll be able to get an idea of
whether your graphics card cuts the mustard.

Right click Computer and select Properties. Click the Windows Experience
Index. THis will show the score for all of your components. There is a link
on that page that opens the help file where you can see a detailed
explanation of what the numbers mean.

Ronnie why does my dreamscene come up with an error. I AM running ultimate
and latest ati graphic drivers, everytime i go to activate it it says
dreamscene has encountered an error. Worked fine when first installed and
then did microsoft updates.
