So I installed and now Vista has slowed down some when starting up. Are
there any other anti-virus programs for Vista, preferably free, that don't
slow down Vista much?

Avast! has been the fastest A/V on my machine. Any A/V program is going to
slow down start up on Vista since it is still a beta and A/V are catching up
with the new boot and UAC controls.
