Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

Hello everyone,

I'm using Vista Home Premium on a Dell 1520 laptop that I got about two
weeks ago. The screen is a high-res 1680x1050 15.4" display, and the video
card is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. For adapter chip type, it
shows a Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I'm not sure if any of that
is relevant, but it's there just in case.

Anyway, after I login to my account, whether it's from a restart or after
closing and opening the lid on the computer, the desktop shows up for three
to five seconds, after which the display blinks and seems to reset itself.
The mouse pointer gets reset to the center of the screen. Occasionally, the
screen then blinks a second time, and when the desktop reappears, the
resolution has changed itself from 1680 x 1050 to 1024 x 768.

Would anyone happen to know how to get rid of these problems, the initial
display reset and/or the resolution change? Any help would be much
appreciated!

RE: Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

Install the latest driver from Intel or go the Dell site and get the original
driver from there:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...rsion&lang=eng

And yes, all the stuff you wrote is important

RE: Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

I tried installing the latest video drivers from both the Dell site and the
Intel site, and the problem is still there. The funny thing is, the problem
doesn't happen every time.

RE: Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

Hmm...make sure that all the Intel 3D properties are set to default.

Just in case you don't know how: Control Panel > Intel Graphics Media > 3D
settings

While your there check the Display Settings Tab and the Aspect Ratio
Options, which should be set to maintain aspect ratio.

Push comes to shove you can remove the Intel monitor through Control Panel >
Device Manager > Click + at Display adapters > right-click Mobile Intel >
Uninstall > Restart Computer

Now, when you restart Vista should go through the "found new hardware" setup
and then look for drivers and reinstall Intel. Just in case it doesn't then
save the driver install package in your documents so you can get to it and
install the drivers manually.

I had screen problems also, not like yours, and uninstalling the Interl GM
software worked.

Good Luck

Re: Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

I am thinking weak cable or poor connection.... remove cable from
BOTH ends if possible and re-hook up... do not just try to snug
your existing connection.

RE: Screen flicker and occasional change in resolution

I actually couldn't manage to find the 3D properties to check if they're on
default, that may be just of the type of video card. I did find the aspect
ratio settings and changed it from full screen to maintain aspect ratio. Hope
it works, thanks!
