Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

I have used the Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port
Switch
for years. I have seen them on sale occasionally for $20. It is a wired
router, but they
have the wireless if you need to go that route. "It's always better to
something in hardware
instead of software" not my words but wisdom never-the-less. Also a router
uses no computer
resources.

Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

A superior Firewall is not too far off when ESET releases their ESET Smart
Security Suite. It is in beta now but I have been using it for about 5 weeks
with great results. It will come with NOD32 antivirus and an anti spam
module for Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail.

Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

Not that there aren't reasons however why do you need something
other that the Windows Firewall?

Advanced Firewall

Start - Search - WF.msc

Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

BTW, if you really need more than the Windows Firewall get
a hardware solution and use it and the Windows Firewall.

Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

I disable the windows firewall and use ashampoo. I don't like not knowing
what the firewall is or isn't allowing. after setting up ashampoo, it will
ask you about all activity and allow to create rules so you don't get
bombarded with prompts all the time. but if it detects activity that has no
pre-defined rule, it will ask you to allow or block. I've had spyware
infections that when phoning home, the windows firewall didn't even try to
block or notify me about...I don't like that.

How many spyware infections have phoned home bypassing ashampoo? Nothing
running on your computer can be relied upon to stop something else running
on your computer.

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in
itself due to the advanced features the FW and Vista are using.

Please elaborate in relation to your observed results of this fw.

Re: Recomendations for a Firewall

It defaults to fully automatic mode, where you get zero prompts. It will use
a pre-defined list (updated mostly daily) to I.D. which programs should be
allowed outgoing access.

It also has "interactive" mode, which is almost exactly the same as what you
get with ZoneAlarm Professional for XP. You will get the prompts which allow
YOU to decide what comes in and goes out.
