Vista Tutorial - error no keyboard present

this is on a windows xp--it says error no keyboard present press F1 to
continue --DEL to enter setupr(flashing line under pr in setupr) does any one
know what I can do --it is connected and I tried another keyboard too. No
matter what I do it just stays the same.

Don't mean to insult your intelligence but it happens, especially if
there are kids about.

Has anything happened that might be unusual, power outage, some download
that didn't seem to work before you last switched off etc.

I ask because this could be a hardware or BIOS problem and not related
to XP at all, in fact it is before the OS even starts so it most likely
is not related at all.

You may have to remove the case, although see if you can borrow another
KB or something first. If yours are both USB then certainly trying a
friend's PS2 (The round plug) type would be a good idea.

If the system boots and the keyboard works fine after pressing F1, you can
enter the BIOS setup by pressing DEL. There is most likely to be a setting
that you can select to ignore all errors on POST.

As you have a Dell, you are likely to have a USB keyboard. You could also
try looking for an option to disable the IRQ reservation for a PS/2 keyboard
in the BIOS.

This isn't a Vista or XP problem. It is with your hardware. What kind of
keyboard are you using PS2 or USB. If USB you may have to change settings
in the BIOS otherwise, you probably have a problem with your PS2 port on the
motherboard

I must have subconsciously thought Dell, because of the word DEL in your
post, heh. If the computer keyboard does indeed work after pressing F1 and
booting into Windows, you can disable stopping on errors in the BIOS, if you
look for the option. What is making this error occur is another matter, and
has nothing to do with Windows itself.

It isn't XP since this is happening during POST and it doesn't even know
what OS it is passing to

I appreciate the problem, you can't get to reset the BIOS or anything
else without a keyboard
