Dial Up

Question: Is there an MVP dedicated to Dial-Up issues? I realize that in
the Vista and IPv6 era, dialup connections are passe, but many of us are
stuck with it due to location, ISP issues, etc. I have had several annoying
problems with my dialup connection apparently caused by Vista, and have
posted questions on newsgroups and the TechNet forum. Have never received
an answer! Does anyone know of a non-MS group that deals with dialup
problems?

Re: Dial Up

Why do you think they are caused by Vista. I have a satellite connection
because I am in an area where there is no high speed land service. I
therefore have to have a dial-up backup if I want to get connected during
the many outages caused by weather, etc. I have no problems with my dial-up
on any of my computers when I have to resort to it.

Re: Dial Up

Forgot to mention that my land line only gets a 22-24k connection due to the
quality of the lines out here.

No to both questions, but what problems? The only problems I've had with
dialup was during beta testing when I had driver problems with my dialup
modems.

Re: Dial Up

I have a notebook. At home, I have dialup. If I try to connect to the
Internet before I remember to plug in the phone, Vista fails--of course--but
then it stops working correctly. If I plug in the phone line, Vista continues
to try the original (software) connection and waits--and waits. Closing the
various windows does not help. Going to Control panel and telling it to
"disconnect" does not work.
My only option seems to be to restart the machine.

What am I missing?

Re: Dial Up

My screen name is appropriate--I am using a brand new notebook with Vista
Home Premium preinstalled.
I just read that it makes a difference: if an Internet connection is not
available, it dials the phone automatically. If the line is plugged in, it
works just fine.

Re: Dial Up

I have 3 computers on dial-up. Two of them run on XP and I have no problems
with dial-up. The new laptop with Vista on it is nothing but trouble. That
leads me to believe that the problem is caused by Vista. I just want a
simple fix. I have contacted the internal modem manufacturer, every dial-up
ISP, Gateway and MS. No luck! Everyone just keeps passing the buck " not us
.. . . Not us . . Not us"

Re: Dial Up

Which Vista version do you have installed, 32-bit or 64-bit? I have set up
numerous systems with dial-up accounts, and it is as easy as XP, same
process, slightly different starting point. I would check first in device
manager and see if your modem has the proper driver installed. If not,
contact the modem manufacturer and get the correct driver for Vista86 or
Vista64. When it shows up correctly, set up the dial-up account. There is
a troubleshooting process if you need to use it, but I doubt you would need
it. If you get the driver for the modem set up properly, and still need
help, post back with the specifics, step by step, with error codes and
someone will help.
