Windows Update error 800B0100

Last successful update was on 24/08/2007.

Since then, I only get "Windows could not search for new updates" Error
code 800B0100.

I attempted to rename SoftwareDistribution, which fails with error "You
need permission to perform that action". And Yes, I am an Administrator
on this computer.

I attempted to download and install new WindowsUpdateAgent30, which
fails with error "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is
already installed".

I disabled antivirus, turned firewall off, started every not running
service in Services - didn't help.

This is Windows Vista Home Basic that came with my new notebook.

I had that same exact error code. I deleted all the contents of ...

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Rebooted my system, it then worked for me. Hope that helps you.
