Vista - No Sound With Upgrade To Win Vista

Hello,
I have just reformatted my laptop computer and got rid of win xp and
now have windows vista ultimate edition. Unfortunately i have no sound.
The computer seems to be working fine but sound is important and i can't
do my school work and projects without it. I have currently INTEL AC '97
sound drivers currently installed from the vista cd which wasn't from
gateway. In system> device manager it says that it is working but it's
not true. Looking over the gateway website is useless because they
don't have drivers i need from win vista. Supposedly i believe i need a
soundmax codec ac'97 driver for windows vista. But i am not sure!? Thats
the all the info they have about my laptop on the gateway site. In fact
it says "PC 2001 compliant ac 97 audio" Can someone help me with the
correct driver. The realtek one didn't work for me can someone shed
some light on this. Thankyou very much!

yes i have checked all sound manager everything is on and it shows that
sound is coming out with those green lines but no sound is being
produced.
