Vista - Winsock ftp client stopped working

I use Cute ftp (v 2.8 - yes, it's old but it has always worked fine). I was
using it this morning - connected to two different sites - ftp'd files and
then quit. About 1/2 hour later I tried to re-open it and now I get this
"winsock ftp client has stopped working" and the only option I have is to
"close program." The error code in the log is 1000 - anyone have any similar
experience or know what the solution is to this one? I've had Vista for
several months now and have not had a problem with Cute ftp until today (and
no updates were installed while I was working this morning so that's not the
