Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

I run Vista Home Premium and Internet Explorer 7. IE has suddenly stopped
working. Is this a known fault? Is there a cure?

Re: Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

My son called me from Georgia yesterday. All of a sudden he had hundreds of
icons generating on his desktop. He couldn't stop the process. I told him to
power down the computer. When he again started it up the desktop was back to
normal. Try a reboot. If that doesn't work - try recycling your power.
Disconnect it from the mains for a few seconds. See what happens.

Re: Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

No, Richard, those things don't work. I've rebooted several times. I've also
completely disconnected. Same result. Whatever URL I attempt to reach, I get
the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Something is
wrong with Vista or IE that wasn't wrong three days ago and I need to find
out what it is.

Re: Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

Do you have a 3rd party firewall install - even one that is part of a
so-called security suite? If so, turn off that firewall for a short test.
Does I.E. work now?

Are you actually connected to the Internet? This can happen when there's no
connection. You may have no connection because the cable is pulled, the
network card or modem failed, your Internet service provider company's
servers are down, your network settings and/or firewall are configured
incorrectly.

Re: Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

That did it! I run Kaspersky and I just switched the firewall off. I suppose
that leaves me using Windoes Firewall. Anyway, thanks.

Yes, Saucy, I've been getting my emails no problem.

So you can get emails but not the www?

Try typing this into your browser address bar:

64.233.169.104

If that gets you the Google homepage, you have a DNS problem.

Re: Internet Explorer has stopped working. Why?

my wife had a similar issue tonight with Vista and internet explorer.

Continuously said it could not display the webpage.

- Removed one system update mentioned in another thread
- reset settings
- turned off add-ons
- pretty much every other suggestion listed

In the end, we narrowed it down - MacAfee. Immediately after removing it, everything worked again.
