Problem setting up newsgroups in Thunderbird

I had problems with WinMail so now I am using Thunderbird for mail. I can
not get Thunderbird to set up news servers. I tried to set up the MS
Communities and also my Roadrunner server - I know the Roadrunner server
name and default port are correct - but every time I click on Manage - I get
an error that says "Failed to connect to server news-server.satx.rr.com".
Default port is 119. I am using Windows Vista home. Any help would be
appreciated. Right now I am getting newsgroups through WinMail (that is
what works in WinMail) and mail through Thunderbird and I would like to only
have to use one program.

Are you using the latest version of TBird? If you are receiving email,
then your account is set up correctly. All you should have to do is fill
in the Name and email address. Possibly, you are not identifying the
account correctly (top box). Is your ISP your newsgroup server? If so,
give them a call and verify what they use for the name of the account.
I'm using Vista64 w/TBird and my ISP provides newsgroup access.

I know all that info because I have it set up in WinMail and it works. I
have the latest vers of Thunderbird - downloaded it because I was having the
same email problems everyone else was having in WinMail. i have my
roadrunner and Microsoft Comunities newservers set up with the exact same
info as WinMail - but when I click on Manage identity it says "failed to
connect to servername" and neither one connects. I have tried with and
without SSL checked. The parameters are correct or I wouldn't get anything
in the newsgroups in WinMail - and I do. I am getting mail just fine in
Thunderbird. So I thought I would throw it out here since there are so many
other Vista problems and I just recently got Vista with my new computer. I
was happy with the XP on my old computer - but the computer needed to be
replaced. I am an IT person for the army - but I am not an email or
newsgroup expert - so I am relying on people's edxperiences here for help.

Edit Accounts, click on server settings.

Try news.securecomp.org
port 119

No SSL

Nothing else matters.

Click on Outgoing server

server name is whatever your ISP that you are connecting through gave
you for your email, unless they told you different example
mail.mchsi.com which is mediacom's so yours will be different.

Port is 25

You probably do NOT need user name checked and NO security setting.

I am wondering if your SMTP server settings are somehow getting in the way

I know for sure the securecomp settings will work so if they don't for
you there may me a clue in there.

I got access denied from the server name in your previous post so it
looks like you got the name right but maybe it's picky.

You can try also msnews.microsoft.com

news://msnews.microsoft.com and
news://news.securecomp.org should also work as links but of course is
winmail is set as your default client you will go there instead

news://news.annexecafe.com is also one you could try

If these work and the others don't then it's Thunderbird or the server
and my guess would be the server upset about something or other.

I will try that later today. WinMail is not my default. I already have
msnews.microsoft.com set up with port 119 and no SSL and that is one I am
having problems with also.

Thank you so much. It probably was the SMTP settings. I removed my name
from the outgoing mail server. Then I tested the securecomp server you
suggested and that worked. So I removed the previous two servers and
re-added them and voila - all of them now work - Thank you again. So anyone
out there having problems with newsgroups in Thunderbird - try removing your
name from the outgoing server and then re-add the news servers - Worked for
me.
