Microsoft Word- Built in Camera- Fingerprint Scanner- Lenovo 3000 N100 Thinkpad

I recently purchased a Lenovo 3000 N100 Thinkpad (notebook- whatever they
call it). I have a few issues that I need help with:

1. This computer was purchased with Windows Vista, but I believe the
business version of this. Since I bought it brand new from my roommate who
would rather have a "Tablet" i got a good deal ($400 brand new). However, I
notice there is no microsoft word or excel, etc. on the computer. Is it here
somewhere and I haven't found it, or can someone suggest where I could go to
install such types of programs.

2. This Thinkpad has a built in camera, and i love it when i can talk with
my son in new york on the phone and he can see me and i can see him (i live
in chicago). However, I have to Use Picasa 2 ONLY TO TAKE pictures. I would
like to be able to make a movie so i can email it to him or anyone, for
special occassions, etc. Is there a way to do it with the current software
available on my computer, or can someone suggest where i can get software to
download that will work with the built in camera to make such movies?

3. This Thinkpad also has a built in fingerprint scanner, for security
purposes. i like it, but although it is built in, i do occassionally get a
message that it isn't plugged in. How do i solve this problem, when i is
built in and there is no USB device to plug as the error message reads. This
usually happens when i shut my computer down for elongated periods of time.

any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks, Tom

Word, Excel etc are separate programs. They are not a built-in part of
Windows. You have to buy the programs. They come together in Microsoft
Office. Or you can buy Word and/or Excel as separate stand-alone programs.

That model is not actually a Thinkpad. Lenovo bought the desktop and laptop
computer business from IBM, but they have kept the name for their more
expensive enterprise models that have continued to be pretty much as
Thinkpads were before. Thinkpads actually say Thinkpad on them, have blue
Enter keys, red Trackpoint pointers, and other distinctive features.

You need to buy it. If you are a student you can get the Teacher and
Student Edition (or something called similar) which is much cheaper than the
normal version. The only difference is what apps are supplied, and it says
Student Edition on the startup screen and on the titlebar, etc.

I don't know if Vista Business has Movie Maker. But if it does, you could
try using that, setting the webcam as the capture source.

Try asking this question at the ThinkPad forums. They have a section for
non-ThinkPad Lenovo models too, and there might be others there that have
experience with this problem.

I just tried recording a movie from my webcam using Movie Maker, and I could
not do it. The Vista version does not allow you to capture from streamed
sources anymore in the same way the XP version could.

I tried looking on Google for some software to do this, and there is a lot,
but not free, as far as I could find:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourc...rding+software

I did find this, but it does not say whether it works okay in Vista or not:

In Office 2007 it's now called Office Home and Student. Costs about $150. I
got it on sale at Best Buy recently for $130. I'm sure there are deals out
there if you look for em (but avoid the discount-OEM-download guys!)
At any rate, you no longer have to be a student to qualify for this. But
user agreement says you can't use it for "commercial purposes."

There is a promotion out now called "Ultimate Steal" where a student with a
valid school e-mail address can get Office Ultimate for about $60.00 (yes,
that is the correct price).

This is a time limited offer!
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f...matesteal.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...teStealPR.mspx

and finally at:
http://www.theultimatesteal.com/home.asp details of the steal.

Your options include buying MS Office or installing OpenOffice.org for
free. OpenOffice is an MS office work-alike which can import and export MS
office files and contains most of the functionality - it won't cost you a
cent to find out if it will meet your needs.

Neither Windows Vista, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
included Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other significant
application software. Such programs have to be bought, either by
themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows, came
with some of these programs, it was because the vendor who sold it
bundled them as part of the package he sold you, not because that
version of Windows came with them. Some, but not all, vendors do the
same with Windows Vista.

Based on what you've told us, almost certainly not, but you can check
wherever you bought it to be sure.

As I said, you need to buy your own application programs. If Word and
Excel are what you want, you should buy a copy of Microsoft Office. If
you want to save some money, you may be able to find a used copy of an
older version, and that may be adequate for your needs. Alternatively
there are cheaper office suites available, like WordPerfect Office and
Star Office. There is even the freeware OpenOffice, which some people
are happy with.

It's your choice, but if you are looking for a place to get Microsoft
Office for free, there is no place where you get it for free legally.

To get your office suite, simply go to: http://openoffice.org and download
the free Open Office. Ii is a full suite and even writes to .pdf files.
When you only want MS Office compatibility, you simply save as a Microsoft
..doc document so that people using MS Office can open the file. However,
when you want to comply with the world standard Open Document Format, there
is no need to save as a Microsoft file. Simply save normally and you are
compatible with the world wide format. The download if free, available in
100 or so languages and several platforms.
