| Guest | "run as administrator" option greyed out- please help! Hi, I am trying to install Stata 10 on windows Vista. The manual says that the first time I run Stata, I must run it as an administrator by right- clicking on the Stata application icon. However, when I right-click, I do not see the option to 'run as adminstrator'. I went to the Properties> advanced, and the option to 'run as administrator' was greyed out. Do you have any ideas of what I am doing wrong? And how can I get Vista to allow me to 'run as administrator'????? Thanks so very much, Kate |

Once the install is done, then you can enable UAC again. To enable/disable UAC, you use the Windows-Key and R-key, which should pop-up the Run Box where you enter MSCONFIG. You can go to the Tools tab where you can disable/enable UAC. |

You can go to the Tools tab > where you can disable/enable UAC. Thanks for your response. I tried turning off UAC under control panel > user accounts. I was still not able to start Stata-- I still get the same error message: "I cannot open C:\Program Files\Stata10\STATA.LIC for writing. No Action Taken." ? ? I was told by the FAQs on the Stata website, that this is because the default Vista permission settings do not allow applications write permissions to their respective install directories even if you are logged in to a machine as administrator. Stata needs these permissions to install. They say to get around the problem you must right-click on the Stata executable in the Stata install directory and select "Run as Administrator" from the right-click menu to open Stata. But as I mentioned, I cannot run as administrator. |

In either case, you should see the Run As Admin with you right-click the short-cut. You should also be able to see the Advanced button too off of Properties. Well, that's the way it works on my Vista. ;-) |

Do you know how to get the install exe on the hard drive? |

You select all the files/folders on the CD and copy/paste the CD to Kate. And you run the install.exe form Kate, which should be able to make the short-cut at that point. You should be able to copy from the root folder on the CD so that it copies everything at once to Kate. If that don't work for you, then you need to get on the phone with the software's tech support and tell them *you are telling me I need to Run As Admin* to install your software on Vista. Tech Support, you tell me how to do this. |
