| | Changing mailto protocol in Vista I want to change the default email program from Outlook to Blitzmail (blitzmail is a 3rd party email application, supplied by my school -- the program installed on my computer without any difficulties and works fine, so I know there are no computability issues). I found the following directions on the Microsoft website for how to do this: 1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs. 2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program. 3. Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for. 4. Click Change program. 5. Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.) 6. Click OK. HERE'S MY PROBLEM: In step 5 above, there is no "browse" button to select other programs, and the program I want to select is not listed. So how do I change the MAILTO protocol default? |

| | Re: Changing mailto protocol in Vista Make sure that the program "blitzmail" is compatible with Windows Vista. The application must register an entry in the "RegisteredApplications" registry branch in order to be used with the "Default Programs" feature in Windows Vista. Ref: "Registering an Application for Use with Default Programs" http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...x#registration Contacting the manufacturer of the program "blitzmail" is your best option. -- Regards, Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Shell/User] Windows® Troubleshooting http://www.winhelponline.com "Joel Dahl" <JoelDahl@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:8935198B-118B-48D1-B2BF-205D1E7F751F@xxxxxx I want to change the default email program from Outlook to Blitzmail (blitzmail is a 3rd party email application, supplied by my school -- the program installed on my computer without any difficulties and works fine, so I know there are no computability issues). | | Re: Changing mailto protocol in Vista The manufacturer of "blitzmail" (Dartmouth College) is not responding to my emails. Do you have a ballpark guess as to what I want to do in order to register blitzmail in the "RegisteredApplications" registry branch like you suggest? Is this something I do locally on my machine, or is it something that Dartmouth needs to do with Microsoft? Sorry for the stupid question . . . we're getting into a level of technicality that's beyond my computer know-how. Thanks! Take a look at this tutorial for a reference and when you get to step 7, navigate to the .exe file for Blitzmail. If Blitzmail is compatible with Vista, it should work then for the MAILTO protocol. | | Re: Changing mailto protocol in Vista >> Is this something I do locally on my machine, or is it something that Dartmouth needs to do with Microsoft? Something to do locally (in the registry) on your PC. Blitzmail seems to be a mail client designed for a specific college/university. Perhaps you can mail me on this topic and I'll try creating a patch for you. -- Regards, Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Shell/User] Windows® Troubleshooting http://www.winhelponline.com "Joel Dahl" <JoelDahl@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:66BD600E-E45A-45A3-89BF-AF0DE4D8AD94@xxxxxx The manufacturer of "blitzmail" (Dartmouth College) is not responding to my emails.
