Password protected document?

I found this document while going through and cleaning up my hard drive, it
was a compressed file and had to be extracted so I extracted it to my
documents and when I tried to open it I got a message saying
'read0600win_ENUadbe0040......' is protected. Please enter a document open
password. I tried to use my admin password, but no luck, it's only a 48kb
adobe document. Any ideas as to what the document is, what the password might
be or how to access it would be very helpful. I already took ownership in
properties>security>advanced>owner and that didn't work either.

Re: Password protected document?

One of the options while using Adobe's PDF creation software is to password
protect the file's content. That way only people who you give the password
to can read the document. I don't know how to get around the problem. When
you right click the file and choose properties do you get any info as to
author or source?

Hi Kathryn,

by the shortcut 'ENU' it looks like the file is protected by password due to having some kind of importance with updating the Adobe to a newer version. The only thing I could dig up is :

Adobe Forums - Error 1334 when trying to update from 7.05 tom 7.07

Error: 1334 the file [filename] cannot be installed when upgrading Acrobat or Adobe Reader 7.0 to 7.0.5, 7.0.7, or 7.0.8

Hope this make sense for you. It looks like the file is compressed and when updating it's being extracted to Data1.cab.

You can always e-mail Adobe (if you purchased your copy legally) and ask them for explanation.

Best Regards

Its actually pretty easy to crack the protection on PDF files.

Re: Password protected document?

No Paul, there is no information in properties>PDF title, author, subject,
and everything else is blank, on the details tab it has information about me,
because I took ownership of the document, but that's it. Thank you for the
reply, I appreciate your efforts.

Re: Password protected document?

Dear Jack:
I am very grateful for all of the time you put into looking for the answer
for me and it does make sense as it was in the "adobe 7" file folder even
though I have upgraded to adobe 8. The only two files in the folder were this
one and data1.cab so that's probably exactally what it is and I guess that it
also makes sense that it would be password protected by adobe so that it
couldn't be altered in any way. I guess that I am safe to delete the files
now. My main concern before deleting the document was that it was in some way
connected to vista and the last thing I want is to create another problem
that vista didn't already have (LOL).

Well, I don't to promote possible criminal activity

I have removed the protection that stopped editing of the architectural
details sample files from www.detail.de, to remove the banners across the
pages, so that they can be viewed properly.

If you search on Google it won't be difficult to find these programs.
