Black screen when starting up

Hi, my father just got a new computer with Windows Vista (Home Premium) and
whenever you start the computer it goes to a black screen when the desktop is
supposed to be popping up. He was at a loss as to what to do...since nothing
was happening, so I figured I'd check it out. There is no username sign in
window that pops up which is what I'm used to seeing and the only way I
managed to get by the black screen was with some high tech button
mashing...mouse clicking, "esc" button hitting, etc.

Anyone have any ideas? or should he just take the computer back to Best Buy
and tell them to take a look at it?

Yes, he should just take the computer back although the Best Buy people
are pretty awful when it comes to tech support. However, since he bought
it there and it is under warranty, they should fix or replace it.

Yes, of course you should take it back. It's new and it doesn't work.
It's their responsibility to fix or replace it.
