| Guest | Permissions problem I need to remove some entries in the Vista registry due to an error in installing my Kodak EasyShare 5500 printer. I am the only person using this computer, and supposedly I am the Administrator (at least, that what it says under "USERS"). However, when I try to remove the values from the registry, I get an error that says "Can not delete <name of item>. Error while deleting key". I also get "Access is denied" errors when I try to open some folders in the registry. Any ideas as to why I can not remove these values from the registry? I have also tried to change permissions on the values I need to remove, but all those changes have been denied. Am I not the Administrator, or has Microsoft somehow hidden somewhere that one needs to be an uber-Adminstrator in order to do anything? Thanks in advance. Frank M. Greco |

Greco You will need to take ownership of the Registry Key first, then you will be able to modify it. See method two in this tutorial to see how. Take Ownership of file Shawn |

| Administrator | Re: Permissions problem Sorry, I updated the tutorial. For a registry key you will see the screenshot for step 8 first instead of the one for step 5. Are you trying this for the key in the left pane? Shawn |

| Guest | Re: Permissions problem O.K., solved part of the problem. I clicked on START, and in the "START SEARCH" area, I typed cmd. I opened cmd with admin rights (right click cmd and click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR). At the command prompt, I typed: net user administration /active:yes I then restarted the computer. Once rebooted, I had access to the real admin account, and cleared out enough of the registry entries so that I could reinstall almost all of the Kodak Easyshare 5500 program and all the drivers (I could not remove a handful of registry values (access denied, which I found interesting since I thought I should have been able to remove them), but at least I got the drivers installed so I could use the printer. Once finished, I rebooted and entered my regular account, went back to the command prompt and typed: net user administration /active:no to close out the real admin account. Not a perfect solution, but it seemed to work. Frank |

| Guest | Re: Permissions problem Frank- What registry key values are you modifying to get your Kodak Eastshare 5500 printer to work? I bought the 5100 a few months ago and it refuses to work with 64-bit Vista. Kodak tech support is virtually non-existent. Thanks. Brian "Frank M. I did this under the true adminisator account. However, it did not work all that well, and I could not use the Kodak AiO software. I finally got a resolution from Kodak Customer Support. It's long, but it did work: ......Begin..... Thank you for your patience, while we work through the issue you are having with your printer. I have a possible resolution to your issue, that I would like you to attempt. Below you will find some instructions for using a few utilities to clear the existing software off of your computer. This may allow us to reinstall it correctly. The procedure looks long, however, I have tried to make each step as short as possible. Prior to beginning, please temporarily turn off, or disable, any virus, or protection software, on your computer. In addition to the process below, we suspect that the problem is related to your firewall. It is most likely 'remembering' the Kodak scanner driver from the original failed attempt and still viewing it as an attack of some sort and blocking the new install. If you can find a way to remove the Kodak entry in your firewall configuration, then the Kodak software should install properly. If you are using the Microsoft Firewall, Click START, and then select CONTROL PANEL, Open the SECURITY CENTER icon, Open the WINDOWS FIREWALL icon from the Security Center, and then Click the EXCEPTIONS TAB. Check the box for the Kodak program to unblock and click OKAY. The steps are as follows. 1. Disconnect your printer from the computer. Remove the Kodak install CD from your computer. 2. Save two attached files to the desktop of your computer. One is named KODAKUTILITIES.EXE1 and the other is ClearN7_1.exe1. If the files show up on your desktop as "KODAKUTILITIES" without the ".EXE1" at the end, follow steps 3 - 9. If the files show up with thier full name of "KODAKUTILITIES.EXE1", then skep ahead to step 10. 3. Click on the START button. 4. Choose CONTROL PANEL. You may have to select SETTINGS first, and then CONTROL PANEL. 5. Go to Tools in the menu bar above and select FOLDER OPTIONS. 6. Select the VIEW tab. 7. Deselect the option for HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. 8. Click OK. 9. Close all windows. 10. Rename the KODAKUTILITIES.EXE1 file. Change its name to KODAKUTILITIES.EXE. 11. Double click on the KODAKUTILITIES.EXE file. 12. A window will appear. Choose the UNZIP option. 13. Once the file says that it is unzipped, choose the OK option. 14. Choose the CLOSE option. 15. Close all windows. 16. Open MY COMPUTER. 17. Open your C DRIVE. 18. Open the KODAKUTILITIES folder. 19. Open the AIO_CLEANUP folder. 20. Rename the following files. a. cleanup.bat1 ---- > cleanup.bat b. KodakSvc.exe1 ---- > KodakSvc.exe c. regClean.reg1 ---- > regClean.reg d. UNINST.VBS1 ---- > UNINST.VBS 21. Double Click on the cleanup.bat file(you need to Run As Administrator in order for this to work--FMG), and follow the prompts. 22. When a message appears stating that DRIVER UNINSTALLED!, click OK. 23. Close all windows. 24. Rename the ClearN7_1.exe1 file by removing the '1' at the end. Change its name to ClearN7_1.exe. 25. Double Click on the ClearN7_1.exe file (you need to Run As Administrator in order for this to work--FMG), and follow the prompts. 26. When this utility is completed, reboot the computer. 27. Open MY COMPUTER. 28. Open your C DRIVE. 29. Open the KODAKUTILITIES folder. 30. Open the MicrosoftCleanUp folder. 31. Rename the following file. a. msicuu2.exe1 ---- > msicuu2.exe 32. Double Click on the msicuu2.exe file (you need to Run As Administrator in order for this to work--FMG), and follow the prompts for installing the Microsoft Clean Up Utility. 33. When the installation is complete, close all windows. 34. Click START, choose PROGRAMS, and choose WINDOWS (or) MICROSOFT INSTALL CLEAN UP. A Microsoft Installer Clean Up Window will appear. It will have a list of installed packages on your computer. Some of the items, in the list may be remnants of our Kodak Software. We will be using the Microsoft Installer Clean Up to remove these remnants. Please note that the program components you are about to remove using the “MICROSOFT Installer Cleanup Utility” are specific to Kodak EasyShare software and will not affect the performance of other software programs on your system. Kodak is not responsible for any damage caused by use of “MICROSOFT Installer Cleanup Utility” and strongly recommends backing up the system registry. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/EN-US) – Link to registry backup instructions, if needed. 35. Look through the Microsoft Installer Clean Up list for the following items. Aiofw Aioocr Aioprnt Aioscnnr Aspi CardRd81 Center CCHelp CCScore CR2 ESSAdpt ESSANUP ESSBrwr ESSCAM ESSCDBK ESScore ESSCT ESSEMAIL ESSgui ESShelp ESSini ESSONIC ESSPCD ESSPDock ESSShare ESSSONIC ESSstore ESSTOOLS ESSTUTOR ESSvatgt ESSvcpt ESSvpaht ESSvpot HelpCtr HLPCCTR HLPIndex HLPPDOCK HLPRFO HLPSFO HLPSHARE Ksdip KSU Notifier OfotoXMI OttBP OTTBPSDK PCADDIN PCDHELP PCDLNCH SFR SFR2 SHASTA SKIN0001 SKINXSDK VCAMCEN VPRINTOL VPRINTOL WIRELESS 36. If an item in the above list is found, highlight it, and choose the REMOVE button. a. DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING THAT IS NOT ON THE LIST. b. REMOVE ITEMS ONE AT A TIME. c. IF AN ITEM IS NOT IN THE LIST, CONTINUE TO THE NEXT ITEM. 37. Once you have removed the items from the above list, close all windows. 38. Reboot the computer. 39. Turn off any anti-virus and firewall if possible. 40. Attempt to reinstall the software from the WEB by using inserting the CD and selecting the WEB option. 41. Choose NOT to register the software. 42. Select TYPICAL install if you want to install all the EasyShare software along with the drivers. If you only want to use the printer and scanner select a CUSTOM install and then select "do not install" for each of the choices that appear. 43. After the install is completed, restart your computer and turn ON the printer. 44. If your printer is succesfully connected, you can update it's firmware. See the attached file named: fw_5000_801.exe1. In order to run it you will need to rename it by removing the last digit - the number '1'. Then simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until it is complete. ......END..... Like I said, it did work, and I can use the printer/scanner along with the AiO software. however, there is still one problem have not been able to fix, that being when I open the AiO software, running as administration or not, it messes up the colors on my desktop. Once the close the program, the color returns to normal. Here's an explanation (from Windows) of why it happened: .....BEGIN..... If you receive a message that some visual elements, such as window frame transparency, have been turned off, or if you receive a message that the color scheme has been changed to Windows Vista Basic, one of the following might have happened: A program that you're running is incompatible with the Windows Aero color scheme (this is most likely the problem---FMG). When you run a program that is incompatible with the Windows Aero color scheme, some visual elements are automatically turned off. When the program is no longer running, the visual elements that were turned off will be turned on again automatically. Your computer does not have enough memory to run all of the programs that you have open and also run the Windows Aero color scheme (I have plenty of memory--FMG). Try closing some windows or changing your color scheme to Windows Vista Basic (made no difference--FMG). If Windows automatically changed your color scheme to Windows Vista Basic, and you want to change it back to Windows Aero after closing some windows, follow these steps. ....END... I can live with the color distortion, but I'd sure lke to know why it's happening. Frank |
