Hi Dwhiskie,

You will have to install the 64 bit Vista as a clean install. You cannot install it from within the 32 bit Vista.

Re: Product key

I read that if you have vista utimate you can upgrade to the 64 bit version
thru ms and there is a website do do just that. My problem is when it asks
you to enter the product key from your current version "which is on the
sticker on the dvd case" I do just that but a message comes up saying invalid
code and no offer available. I did authenticate my version of windows vista
on ms website . Its the oem version so I should be able to get the 64bit disc
by just paying shipping/handling charge. I looked to see if the product code
thats on my computer was the same as the one thats on my windows case and it
is not. Its not even 25 digets long so Im confused about that.

Dwhiskie,

You can upgrapde to the 64 bit Vista from any version of Vista. Vista Ultimate is the only one that comes packaged with both DVD's for the 32 bit and 64 bit Vista. Since you have a OEM copy and not a Retail copy, you will most likely need to contact the maker of the computer to get the 64 bit Vista Ultimate as you said.

The product key that Vista displays in the the "System" window from the Control Panel is not your true PID number. It is just some encrypted front number. Use the method in this tutorial to extract your real PID number to verify it with the one on the installation DVD sticker. You will need to enter the 32 bit PID number when installing the 64 bit Vista version.

Hope this helps,
