| Guest | 2 items: will not delete file, user account control not showing I downloaded a font from a website and put it in <my user name>/Documents/Received Files. I unzipped it. It contains a file called radiohar.ttf, a truetype font file. I want to delete it, but it won't delete. I am the administrator of the computer. I right click on the file and have full permissions to do everything. In properites, it says, "The file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer." Even when I unblock it, it still won't delete. When trying to delete the file I: Right click the file and choose Delete. A Delete File popup appears asking, Are you sure you want to move this file to the recycle bin? I click Yes. A Destination Folder Access Denied popup appears, saying You need to confirm this operation. I click Continue. A User Account Control popup appears. I push a button to tell it that it should do it. A popup appears, saying Recycling One Item, and then disappears. A Destination Folder Access Denied popup appears, saying You need permission to perform this action. I press continue, and end up back at this Destination Folder Access Denied popup again. I try deleting the next file in the folder. Same thing happens, not deletable. I did finally get one file to turn light gray, but I'm not sure what I did to do this, or what the light gray means. The file does not show in the Recycle Bin. The properties for the file did not change. The file still seems to be there and is still readable, even though it is grayed out. So I decide to turn off User Account Control. I went to the Windows Menu and typed User Account Control. It showed in the list. I clicked on it and nothing happens. No error message, no window opens. So then I search for User, and the window opens. I click turn off User Account Control for my administrative account even though I don't want to. It says to reboot. So I don't know if it will finally allow me to delete the file. I hope I remember to turn it back on before going to the Internet. Microsoft, I guess I have to agree with people that tell me that they don't use User Account Control mode. Now I know why. Please fix these types of problems. Even if I can figure out a way to delete the file, the average user will not be able to delete the file. I also see you have many other users complaining about not being able to delete files. Fix this please. Make it usable for the average user. Thanks, Pam Pierce ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. | Guest | Re: 2 items: will not delete file, user account control not showing it seems you have another problem running on, and not exactly UAC that 2nd dialog with "destination folder access denied" should not be there, unless you were moving the file... that makes a light in my brain and maybe some program is messing your recycle bin making it appear as a normal folder to the system (thus you cannot move files there since it is not yours but systems) wathever, the most typical programs able to mess with your system are antivirus/antispyware/cleaners and codec packs, and in this case i would take a look at any backup software too, i would try to disable them once at a time just to check if one is causing the problem not sure about the problem though, just blindy guessing... but im pretty sure that its not normal at all (i tried) |

| Guest | Re: 2 items: will not delete file, user account control not show hi ihad the same problem with some video files i found that i could only delete them if i started at the file location and deleted it from there eg i could not delete from an expanded tree (hope i made myself clear) -- martyb "Jume" wrote: Quote: > it seems you have another problem running on, and not exactly UAC > > that 2nd dialog with "destination folder access denied" should not be there, > unless you were moving the file... that makes a light in my brain and maybe > some program is messing your recycle bin making it appear as a normal folder > to the system (thus you cannot move files there since it is not yours but > systems) > > wathever, the most typical programs able to mess with your system are > antivirus/antispyware/cleaners and codec packs, and in this case i would > take a look at any backup software too, i would try to disable them once at > a time just to check if one is causing the problem > > not sure about the problem though, just blindy guessing... but im pretty > sure that its not normal at all (i tried) > > |

| Guest | RE: 2 items: will not delete file, user account control not showing Even when I turned off User Account Control and rebooted, I still can't delete the file. I am the owner of the file, I looked. I am at the file location, not in Windows Explorer - sorry Marty, that didn't work. I turned off Eset NOD32 antivirus - that didn't work. I right click the file, choose delete, and then answer yes to "Are you sure you want to move this file to the recycle bin?." It then says "You need permission to perform this action." If I choose Try Again, it still doesn't work. Thanks for trying, but it still isn't deleting. I'm turning back on my antivirus and User Account Control. | Guest | RE: 2 items: will not delete file, user account control not showing Some files in Vista, Bill only knows why, can only be modified (deleted, copied, moved, etc.) by using the Command Prompt (even some that you have just downloaded). Type Command Prompt in the Start Search box from the Start Button, right click on this, then select Run As Administrator. The link below will get you to a list of commands and the proper syntax that will enable you to delete these files. Good luck!
