If you are developing for the Windows platform then, yes - Vista is
reliable.

For Visual Studio 2005, make sure you apply both Service Pack 1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...D-37BAF6B5B1DC

... and the SP1 Update for Vista:
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=6366078

If you are using the Visual Studio 2008 Beta, it runs "as is" on Vista.

For SQL Server 2005, you need to apply Service Pack 2:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=77674

More fine print about SQL Server on Vista, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobu...tasupport.mspx

To test your projects on Windows Server 2003 or 2008, you may want a Virtual
Machine environment running on Vista. Virtual PC is free and is supported on
Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate editions:
Virtual PC 2007
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx

While not strictly required for development on Vista, you may want to
install Network Monitor 3.1:
Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
NetMon is invaluable for understanding the behaviour of distributed and web
applications (especially when the "behaviour" is misbehaving Version 3.1
is fully Vista-compatible.

Hope it helps,

Windows 2003 Server is the server version of XP, and includes IIS 6.0

Re: Reliable OS?

Another thought - if you want to canvass opinions about Vista as a
development platform, try a group like microsoft.public.vstudio.general.
You're more likely to get sensible commentary from real developers.

As you might notice, microsoft.public.windows.vista.general is unfortunately
infested with flame-wars lacking technical substance, useless "advocacy"
discussions, etc.

Good luck with it,

Re: Reliable OS?

Windows Vista is reliable and stable.
But it is not best for everyone.

You already say "XP SP2 has been very reliable for me".
So why are you considering upgrading?
What feature of Windows Vista do you need?

"it doesn't seem that a lot of others agree"
I suppose that depends where you get the information.
A newsgroup with a purpose of solving problems is not the best place
any more than going to a hospital and judging the health of the human
race by the health in the hospital.

The fact a newer version of Windows has been released is not a good
enough reason by itself to upgrade.
Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years.

Most have no need to upgrade and should only do so when a hardware or
software requirement need dictate they do so.

"only to find that I get lots of troubles"
The amount of trouble largely depends on your hardware and software
Windows Vista compatibility.
It also depends on how well prepared you and the computer are for an
upgrade.
Many have no problems, but most of those prepared in advance.

From your description, it seems there is no need for you to upgrade
any time soon.

Is this the official MSFT line? I rather doubt it!

If your primary use is to be web and server applications, then you'll
want to use a server OS. Vista is a client OS.

I never suggested it was.
