Media player only shows one frame per 7 seconds

VISTS Media player only shows one frame per 7 seconds when playing streaming
video from various web sites. The poorly trained techs at each site tell me
that they do not support VISTA and still put out stream as WMP 9 format. They
also tell me that there are no plans to change that any time soon. how can
microsoft put out a player that wont allow users to see older version
video????
Does anyone have any suggestions???!!!
