Remote control help

Hey, I've got a remote control with my Vista Home Edition, but the buttons
seem to "double click" each time i press them, i.e. I press the right key
once and it'll jump twice to the right, I press the pause key and it'll pause
then unpause.

As you can understand this is very very very annoying!!!

Can anyone help?

Is there nothing around that could be interfering with the signal from the remote?

I've also had this happen to me when the batteries in the remote are run down and are no longer delivering enough power.
