Vista - Vista Ultimate MUI install error code 2

I am trying to install the chinese (simplified) language MUI and continue to
get error code 2. I have tried rebooting sveral times. I make sure no other
programs are running. My Windows Vista is activated. I am running the 32 bit
version of Vista ultimate.

After the install is complete the message says install complete then it
tells me some items were not installed successfully and I get the error code
2.

The only MUI I have installed successfully is the Japanese one.

I am using the Windows Update to install the MUIs. I cannot find them
anywhere else.

It almost appears that microsoft is trying to dodge this one as I see no
support anywhere for this problem but I see a lot of people with this problem.

Does anyone have a solution for this? A real solution not some microsoft
security phone number. This is not a security problem that I'm aware of.

"error 2" is a standard Windows error code, meaning -

ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

So something is trying to open a file, and cannot find it. For what its
worth, I've installed the Simplified Chinese MUI on a couple of machines and
it worked fine (there would be several millions angry Chinese, if it didn't
:-). But obviously something is not working right, on your system.

Have a look in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install to see if
you still have the file LP-zh-CN.exe. This is the actual installer which
gets downloaded, via Windows Update. It should be 281,991,984 bytes in size.
If it is still there, move it to some safe location, like your Documents
folder.

Also, open an Administrative command prompt and run the command "lpksetup".
This will launch the "Install or Uninstall Display Languages" applet. Do you
see "Chinese (Simplified)" in the list of installed languages?

While playing around with this, I found the following in Windows Online
Help:

If you received the error after cancelling the update, try to install the
language pack again and do not cancel the installation.

If you received the error but did not cancel the update, restart the
computer and then try to install the language pack again.

Installing language packs affects large areas of the operating system and
can take up to several hours, depending on the number of language packs that
you have selected. We recommend installing only the language packs that you
want to use, installing them when you are not using the computer for other
activities, and closing any open programs before you begin.

To install language packs
If you received the error but did not cancel the update, restart the
computer and then follow the steps below. If you cancelled the update and
received the error, simply follow the steps below (do not restart the
computer).

Open Windows Update.

In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks

So, have you tried restarting the computer and re-installing the Chinese MUI
from scratch?

Hello,

Thanks for the advice. I located the file LP-zh-CN.exe in the directory
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install. The file I have is
237,378,623 bytes which is smaller then yours. Could this be the problem?

I tried running the lpksetup but it did not find any install files. I have
tried all of the tips microsoft has suggested for solving error 1 & 2 but
that doesn't help. I have tried to install this at least 20 times and it is
always the same error. I have turned off the virus software and anything else
I can think of.

I've tried to locate the MUI to download and install but cannot find it
anywhere.

This is very frustrating.

Do you have any other ideas.

What happens when you run the EXE file, on it's own? That is, if you
double-click LP-zh-CN.exe? If all is working normally, it should unpack a
file called lp.cab (which is the installation file lpksetup is looking for)
and then, spawn lpksetup to install the lp.cab file.

Also, look in C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Temp for a log file, with a name
like "lpksetup-20071008-082003-0.log" (the exact name will vary by time and
date). This is the log file created while lpksetup tries to install the MUI.
You may find some additional clues there, about what is going wrong.

Did lpksetup report that you already have teh Chinese MUI installed? If so,
you may need to uninstall it and then re-install it. If it does not show the
MUI installed, try moving LP-zh-CN.exe out of the
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install directory, and then run
Windows Update again, to re-download the file.
Microsoft does not appear to distribute the MUIs via any mechanism other
than Windows Update (as far as I can see). This is unfortunate, since it
adds a layer of complexity which can go wrong, compared to a simple download
from the website.

A quick look under the covers shows that Windows Update on 32-bit Windows
downloaded the file from this URL:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...61ecfa7a45.exe

Plugging this URL into the browser appears to download the MUI normally. So
maybe you can try re-downloading the file via your browser, then run it
manually.

(I'm embarrassed to admit I tried it; but I was curious: interestingly, you
cannot install the downloaded EXE file on Vista Home edition - the lpksetup
log that it sees that it is on Home Edition, and exits. So, downloading the
MUI directly is not a hack to get MUIs onto Home edition machines).

After that ... sorry, I'm running out of ideas. I'd say you would need to do
some deep debugging, there with the machine on front of you (in other words,
not the kind of theing I can easily do for you, via a newsgroup). Or else,
open a Service Request with Microsoft PSS, since they will have all the
inside knowledge about how lpksetup really works.

Hello,

I've tried al of your suggestions and nothing seems to work. I think I will
have to open a case with microsoft and maybe send them the log files.

I looked to see if I could uninstall the chinese language but it was not in
the list. I have successfully installed Japanese, French and Korean not that
I need any of those. I do need the Chinese and of course that is the one that
doesn't work.
