If I was you, I would unistall Microsoft Works.
Also, you must be saving the incorrect file extension.
Check to see what is the default program.

It sounds to me like associations have been screwed up.

Right-Click on any "Word Pad" document that you want to open in word, then select "Open With". In the list that appears, choose Word. If you always want to open those files in word, you may need to check the "Always use this program" box.

Re: Saving word turns into !"£$%^&*()

Open Contol Panel, then search for "Default Programs". You can then from there change the default associations for your files.

If the program you want to use is not on the list, then you must click Browse and then locate the exe for it.

Re: Saving word turns into !"£$%^&*()

  • Click Start
  • Control Panel
  • Programs
  • Default Programs
  • Associate a file type or protocol with a program
  • Find the extension you want to change (.doc), and select it
  • Click Change Program
  • Select the program you want to use from the list. If it does not appear in the list, click browse and find it. It should be somewhere under Program Files ("Program File (x86)" if you're using Vista x64). On my system WINWORD.EXE is in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12"
I really can't get any clearer than that!
