Mass storage device problem :(

Im having problems with my mass storage devices on vista (external
drives, Ipod, flash drives etc).

These were all working 2 weeks ago on the same Vista PC. And all still
work now on other Vista and XP systems.

Mice and webcams work as normal.

In device manager the drives can be seen.

If I open 'My Computer' - nothing is seen and Windows Explorer crashes,
basically I have to restart.

In safe mode the drives are visible in 'My Computer' and I can use them
fine.

When I insert the drive there is a beep, but nothing displays about
drivers or anything. In device manager all drivers are installed and
working well.

I have tried the solution regarding deleting infcache1 and ensuring the
usbstor.inf is in windows/inf etc. I have uninstalled all Usb ports and
this has not done anything.

The only thing I can think of that may have caused the problem is when
my sister was using the PC whilst I was away on work she plugged in a
usb mouse to use as the batteries on the wireless ran out. She said it
worked as soon as she plugged it in. This is the only change to the
system I am aware of.

I have been pratting around with this for 3 days now and its really
annoying, is there anything else I can try before I have to wipe Vista
and start from scratch, surely if its working in safe mode there is
something I can do. Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Alix

I have exactly the same problems. My Toshiba laptop recognises that there
is an IPOD, Freecom Ext HD, HP Printer etc connected via USB, but keeps
asking for drivers. The drivers are installed but the hardware just won't
sync with it!

I went through with HP online help to find a solution and their guys
couldn't work it out.

The only device that works is a mouse.

Someone help us!

Re: Mass storage device problem :(

have you tried logging into the device manager and selecting all usb
devices (one at a time) and checking for driver update, I had a locked
out USB and when I updated problem disappeared

RE: Mass storage device problem :(

I hope you can help me with this mass storage problem?

I want to apologize up front for being so wordy, but I wanted to give you
the background of what I did or tried to do.

I had an old Dell desktop computer using Windows 98se and replaced the hard
drive with a 160 gb
Seagate hard drive. The mother board would only let me configure hard drive
as a 2gb c:\ drive
and a 147gb d:\ petition and it worked fine.

My son gave me a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. I removed the Seagate
hard drive from the
Dell and put it in a hard disk enclosure and attached it to the Toshiba via
USB. The Toshiba
Vista found the hard drive and I could see the software on it and it was
configured as 2gbs
e:\ drive and 147gbs f:\ drive. I removed the software from both the e:\ and
f:\ drives because
I was concerned that the software would not work properly. Next I created a
new folder(Test)
on drive c:\ and a Notepad text test file and put it in Test folder. Next I
copied and pasted
the folder and file on and off the e:\ and f:\ drives. That all worked fine.

My next step was to put some of my old Windows '95 and '98se software(I have
the original disks) on drive f:\ of the Toshiba Vista computer. I started by
Installing Microsoft Office Professional Windows '95. It seems to have
installed properly, but the startup info was put on drive c:\. When I
realized this, I started to rethink how and where to put the old software.

The first thing I did was to uninstall Microsoft Office Professional '95. I
Clicked Start, Clicked Control Panel, Double Clicked Programs and Features,
Clicked Microsoft Office Professional, Clicked Uninstall/Change . A Setup
Window came up and asked to put in the Microsoft Office professional ‘95
CD #1, which I did and clicked OK. The Microsoft Office Professional ‘95
Installation Maintenance window opened . Clicked Remove All button(Remove all
previously installed components ). Setup Message window
opened, saying "Are you sure you want to Remove Microsoft Office
Professional ‘95?" , clicked Yes button.
The hour glass came on as though it was going to execute the removal, but it
immediately went off. Vista Hung up, the only thing I could do was to click
the Start Button and Shut the computer down.

I restarted the computer and found that the Microsoft Office Professional
‘95 was not removed.

Any help you can give will be much appreciated,

Re: Mass storage device problem :(

Found an old Acronis True Image backup file and got Windows back to its
original form without too much loss of data. Still unsure of what the
problem was though, thank god I made the backup
