DVD/CD - DVD quite working but CD still works after Vista Install

Since installing Vista, I have lost the functionality of using the DVD
portion of my DVD/CD writer. It's an HP Media Center desktop, model m7334n.
It used to work and I have burned DVDs when I ran XP. Now when I click on
burn, I get the message, "Insert a disc", but it never goes any further.
I've tried the recommendation to delete filters, but I renamed LowFilters to
OLDLowFilters and had no HighFilters entry under the path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
That didn't make any difference, even after a reboot. I have the current
drivers and am running out of things to try. Does anyone have any ideas how
I can fix this problem. I can read a CD but not DVD. I was using Windows
DVD Maker when trying to burn pictures to a DVD, or double clicking on
DVD/CD in My Computer works for CD but displays "Insert a disc" message when
I insert a DVD.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Paul

Re: DVD/CD - DVD quite working but CD still works after Vista Install

Hi, Paul.

It might be a hardware problem. The DVD laser might have died. :>(

That's what happened to my burner a year or two ago, but in reverse. The
DVD still worked but the CD laser did not. So I handed it down to my son
who already had a CD but not a DVD - and got myself a new one. ;<)

Re: DVD/CD - DVD quite working but CD still works after Vista Inst

RC, I kept going down the route of some software bug since I installed Vista
and didn't think about it actually being a heardware problem. I did some
more tests with the 2nd drive reading DVDs, etc and determined you were
probably right. I dought a new drive, installed it, and everything works
great. Thanks for the idea,

Paul
